Kevin Harvick Slams NASCAR Points System After Alex Bowman Drama

During Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Alex Bowman found himself in a tense situation as he entered the race in the 16th and final playoff position. His playoff hopes appeared to vanish early when he became part of the Lap 27 crash, commonly known as the “big one.”

Despite losing control of his fate, the race outcome favored Bowman. Ryan Blaney claimed the victory, ensuring Bowman’s place in the playoffs since the four drivers chasing wins—Daniel Suárez, Justin Haley, Cole Custer, and Erik Jones—were unable to secure a result that would have eliminated him from contention. This dramatic finish fueled criticism of the current points system, particularly from Kevin Harvick.

Kevin Harvick Critiques NASCAR’s Playoff Points System

On Tuesday’s Happy Hour podcast, Kevin Harvick expressed his frustration regarding the structure of the playoff points system. He argued that the system undervalues consistent performance over the full season, which in Bowman’s case involved 26 weeks of competitive racing.

All the way to the end. There was so many of those guys up in the front there at the end [who needed to win]. … I think Alex Bowman deserves to be in there,

Harvick said.

That’s the part that I don’t like about the current points system is there’s nothing that guarantees rewarding all 26 weeks in there currently.

Harvick highlighted Cole Custer’s situation as an example. Custer, sitting 33rd in points, made the playoffs by winning one superspeedway race, displacing Bowman, who had a steady and solid performance across the majority of the season.

Cole Custer was in the mix, he’s 33rd in the points and to me, that’s tough to knock a guy out by winning one superspeedway race over a guy like Alex Bowman who’s put together 26 weeks.

Ryan Blaney’s Win Secures Bowman’s Spot

Bowman’s playoff berth owed everything to Ryan Blaney’s victory. With the ninth-highest point total in the season, Bowman had been at risk of elimination if any of the four win-hungry drivers had crossed the finish line first. Blaney’s success sent Bowman safely into the playoffs, making him extremely grateful.

7,000,000 beers… I’m certainly thankful for him,

Bowman said, via Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports.

Yeah, Ryan’s a good dude and happy to see him win. He’s had a ton of huge hits here. I don’t know what to say other than that, just thankful that he won.

Bowman’s experience is not unique. Last year’s Daytona winner, Harrison Burton, was far down the points standings yet secured victory and playoff advancement. This unpredictability in superspeedway races has led to ongoing debates about whether points should hold more influence in playoff qualifications.

Harvick Proposes Changes to Playoff Qualification Rules

Discussing potential reforms, Harvick suggested that NASCAR introduce guaranteed playoff spots for teams with strong point tallies over the season. He proposed that the existing system could accommodate multiple winners by initially expanding the playoff field and then eliminating excess competitors in the first round.

I think that there’s probably something to if you want to just leave it like it is, OK. That’s not the way I would do it, but I think there needs to be two or three guaranteed spots for the points and if you have too many winners, then just start the first round with too many cars. You can still earn your way in with wins but start the first round with too many cars and just eliminate more cars in the first round,

Harvick explained.

He emphasized that a driver like Bowman, who sustained solid performance throughout the year, should not be pushed out by a driver with fewer consistent results but a single race win.

A guy like Alex Bowman has put together a decent 26 weeks — a guy like Cole Custer hasn’t. They’re almost dead last of the cars that have run full-time. Having a car knock out a guy like Alex Bowman who’s had the season he’s had just because he hasn’t won a race but put together a decent body of work over 26 weeks, doesn’t make sense to me.

Broader Implications for NASCAR’s Playoff Structure

The controversy surrounding Bowman’s playoff qualification highlights a long-standing tension in NASCAR: balancing the importance of winning against maintaining consistent performance across the season. While excitement from unpredictable wins remains a hallmark of NASCAR racing, Harvick’s comments underscore concerns that the system may undervalue overall season results.

If NASCAR heeds these critiques, future adjustments might introduce guaranteed playoff positions based on points, ensuring that drivers like Bowman, who demonstrate steady performance, are rewarded appropriately. This could reshape how teams strategize their seasons and emphasize both winning and consistency.
