Gresini Racing team principal Michele Masini confirmed that Alex Marquez’s crash during the 2025 MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix was triggered when his front brake lever was accidentally pushed by contact with Pedro Acosta. The incident occurred on lap six at the Assen circuit, where Marquez was engaged in a close battle with KTM’s Acosta exiting Turn 5 before losing control on the approach to the back straight.
Entering the 10th round of the season, Marquez was already 43 points behind the championship leader Marc Marquez. The crash has now increased his deficit to 68 points, with a fractured left hand putting his participation in next month’s German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring in serious doubt.
Details on the Crash and Medical Update for Alex Marquez
Michele Masini explained that telemetry from Marquez’s Ducati clearly showed the crash resulted from the front brake lever being pressed due to contact with Pedro Acosta during their closely contested duel. The stewards reviewed the incident but opted not to penalize either rider, with Acosta eventually finishing the race in fourth place.
“Alex suffered a break of the second bone of the left hand and I think tonight, or at least tomorrow morning, he will have surgery in Madrid,”
Masini revealed during MotoGP’s After the Flag broadcast.
He described the day as difficult and expressed hope for a smooth recovery,
“It was a bad day for us definitely. I hope that he recovers in the right time, and also Fermin [Aldeguer] had a nasty crash but he’s ok at least.”
Further clarifying the crash mechanics, Masini added,

“As you can see from the TV, he [Marquez] touched Pedro and he lost the right handlebar, but he also touched the front brake. So, we saw from the data a lot of pressure on the front brake and he crashed.”
Recovery Outlook and Upcoming MotoGP Calendar
The next Grand Prix at the Sachsenring is scheduled for July 11-13, followed swiftly by the Czech GP the next weekend. Currently, the Gresini team has no definitive timeline for Marquez’s recovery, prioritizing his health over rushing him back onto the grid.
“No, we have to speak with the doctors I think tonight or tomorrow about the rehabilitation of the hand,”
Masini said, emphasizing a cautious approach.
He also expressed the importance of allowing Marquez sufficient time to heal fully and regain competitive form,
“The only thing we can say is I will ask Alex to take his time to recover well and restart from where we are, so at the top. I don’t know if in 10 days how he will feel. We will have to see during this week. This week will be crucial.”
Additional Incidents and Team Challenges at Assen
Aside from Marquez’s misfortune, teammate Fermin Aldeguer also crashed during the race at Turn 12. Honda’s Joan Mir collided with Aldeguer’s fallen motorcycle, but both riders were able to leave the track under their own power. Despite this, they have reported experiencing pain and dizziness following the incident, adding to the team’s overall challenges during the Dutch GP weekend.
