Alex Palou eager to race in NASCAR: Indy 500 champ ready to take on stock cars if given chance

Alex Palou, the recent winner of the Indianapolis 500, has openly expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of competing in the NASCAR Cup Series in the future. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver, who secured his first victory on an oval track last weekend, is keen to explore stock car racing if the opportunity arises, signaling his interest in broadening his racing career beyond IndyCar.

Palou’s Racing Background and Success in IndyCar

Before his Indy 500 triumph, Palou had already made a significant mark by winning three IndyCar championships. His dominant performance throughout this season has further elevated his status as one of the top drivers in the series’ history. Despite his extensive experience in open-wheel racing, Palou has also dabbled in other motorsport categories, including a full season in SUPER GT in 2019 and selective appearances in the IMSA SportsCar Championship over recent years.

Interest in a NASCAR Road Course Race

Although Palou does not plan on switching disciplines full-time, he is intrigued by the idea of participating in a single NASCAR event. During an appearance on Kevin Harvick’s podcast, Palou was asked if he would consider following the path of other IndyCar drivers by racing in a NASCAR event on a road course. He responded emphatically,

“Oh absolutely. I will be down for that.”

He added,

“It’s a very different car, it’s a very different kind of racing. But I know I would get smashed by all of you guys on ovals. But I would love to give it a try on a road or street course.”

Contrasting Views on Racing Across Disciplines

Palou’s enthusiasm for NASCAR contrasts with his lack of interest in moving to Formula 1 at this point, as he stated recently that he does not want to leave IndyCar for another series. This season’s Indy 500 also featured Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, attempting the ‘double’ by racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 again.

Larson has encouraged IndyCar drivers to explore NASCAR, inviting them to consider taking on the challenge of competing in both the iconic Indy 500 and a NASCAR race on the same day, which highlights a growing connection between these racing disciplines.

Potential Impact of Palou’s NASCAR Debut

If Alex Palou pursues a NASCAR race, particularly on a road or street course, it could open doors for further crossovers between IndyCar and NASCAR drivers, enriching both series with fresh competition and increased fan interest. His established success in IndyCar and willingness to try stock car racing could inspire similar moves by other drivers, potentially leading to more diverse racing experiences and growing collaboration between racing communities.
