Austin Dillon is preparing to return to Richmond Raceway, the site of a dramatic victory and controversy one year ago. While Dillon led 35 laps and won the NASCAR Cup Series race last season at Richmond, his actions on the final lap sparked turmoil, involving collisions with race leader Joey Logano and competitor Denny Hamlin. Although Dillon kept the win, <a href="https://www.big14news.com/nascar/”>NASCAR stripped him of playoff eligibility, leaving him unable to compete for the championship.
Despite the penalties, Dillon recalls that night as a highlight of his career and now aims to not only win again but also secure his place in the playoffs with a stronger, cleaner performance.
It was still a big day, and I’ll always remember it as one of my favorite wins,
Dillon said ahead of the Cook Out 400 at Richmond, via Nick DeGroot of Motorsport.
We got the trophy, just not the NASCAR Playoffs spot. That part was a struggle, and I hate it for RCR, but this year, going back, I definitely want to go out there and try to win again, but this time lock ourselves into the Playoffs.
We had a dominant car last year and really came on strong at the end. We had a multiple-second lead and passed two of the best to do it, so that’s pretty cool.
The Stakes: A Win Is Essential for Playoff Qualification
Last year’s Richmond race ended with an unfortunate caution that altered the outcome, with Dillon losing his lead to Joey Logano on the overtime restart. Facing the urgent need to win to clinch a playoff spot, Dillon aggressively sought to reclaim the lead in the final corner, resulting in contact and subsequent penalties. This year, the situation is clear: Dillon must win to break into NASCAR’s 16-driver postseason lineup.
Looking forward to Saturday’s race, Dillon is motivated by the chance to replicate last year’s strong showing and earn the playoff berth he narrowly missed previously.

I’m pumped to get to Richmond Raceway in the No. 3 Chevrolet,
Dillon said.
I’ve been excited about that one all year. I just want to get there and see if we can be as successful as last year. We had a two-second lead with however many laps remaining in the race, drove past Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, and the car was just really solid.
Unfortunately, an untimely caution put us in a difficult position. We worked a little bit this week in the SIM just to see how it correlated, and I thought it correlated very well. We will go there and give it our best shot. Feel like it could be a good opportunity to put us into the NASCAR Playoffs with just two races remaining until the cutoff.
Reflecting on Richmond and Looking Ahead to the Playoffs
Dillon’s Richmond victory last year was a moment of both triumph and controversy, his aggressive moves reminding fans and competitors of his determination to succeed at the highest level. The challenge now for Dillon and Richard Childress Racing is to harness that strength without risking penalties, aiming to progress into the playoffs with a strong performance at Richmond.
With only two races left before the playoff cutoff, the Cook Out 400 represents a pivotal opportunity for Dillon to transform his Richmond history, not only by solidifying a repeat win but by finally securing the postseason position that eluded him in 2023. Success at Richmond will enhance Dillon’s championship aspirations, making this return a crucial turning point in his NASCAR season.
