Carlos Sainz Drives Williams to First Podium in Four Years

Carlos Sainz delivered an electrifying performance at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, steering Williams to its first podium finish in four years with a dramatic third-place result. This milestone victory highlights the team’s resurgence and marks a bold statement that Williams is regaining competitiveness in the championship.

Sainz earned a strong second position on the starting grid after a challenging qualifying session, maintaining composure and skill to finish the race in third place. This achievement is particularly notable as it represents Williams’ first podium since George Russell’s second place under wet conditions at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, and their first outright podium since Lance Stroll’s 2017 success in Baku.

The Driver’s Perspective: Precision and Perseverance Rewarded

Over team radio, an exhilarated Sainz described the race as his first “smooth operation” with Williams and expressed confidence that this success is just the beginning. Reflecting on the moment, he conveyed how meaningful the accomplishment felt, surpassing even his debut podium finish at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Honestly, I cannot describe how happy I am, how good this feels,

Sainz exclaimed.

It tastes even better than my first podium!

Despite a season that had been marred by bad luck and missed chances, Sainz’s result is a testament to the team’s relentless effort. He praised Williams’ consistent speed over the year and emphasized how bringing everything together on race day made the difference.

We’ve been fighting hard all year, and finally proved today that when we have the speed – we’ve had it all year – and everything comes together, we can do some amazing things together,

Sainz said passionately.

Today we nailed the race, not one mistake, and we managed to beat a lot of cars that yesterday I wasn’t expecting to beat.

Williams’ Struggles and a Shift in Momentum

The podium at Baku signals a notable turning point for Williams, a team that for years has found it difficult to keep pace with the front runners. Sainz underscored this progress as a significant step forward for the entire organization.

We’ve proven to everyone the massive step we’ve taken compared to last year. We are on the rise, in the right direction,

he affirmed, highlighting that the result has meaning beyond just the race itself.

Throughout the season, Sainz often found himself in the shadow of teammate Alex Albon, who has typically been Williams’ top scorer. However, with Albon facing a challenging weekend in Azerbaijan, Sainz was forced to carry the team’s hopes alone, embracing the challenge with resilience.

Unfortunately, with me, we’ve had a lot of bad luck, a lot of incidents, and it’s been very difficult to turn all that pace into results,

he reflected.

Now I understand why it all happened because the first podium needed to come like this.

He added a philosophical note on the journey that led to this moment.

It’s just life. Life sometimes brings you those bad moments to bring you a very nice one, and this tastes much better than anything I was expecting. It’s a life lesson, to keep believing, trusting yourself, your team around you, your procedures, because sooner or later, it always pays off.

A Renewed Aspirational Path for Williams

This podium finish not only boosts Williams’ morale but also sends a clear message to the Formula 1 paddock that the historic team is evolving positively. With Carlos Sainz at the helm and a collective determination to improve, the future appears more promising than it has in years.

The challenge now lies in sustaining this momentum as Williams looks to rebuild its legacy and compete regularly at the front. Whether this podium represents the start of a consistent resurgence or a singular event remains to be seen, but it undeniably marks a hopeful chapter in the team’s journey.
