Carlos Sainz Sr Withdraws from FIA Presidency Race, Clearing Path for Ben Sulayem’s Controversial Re-Election

Carlos Sainz Sr has officially announced that he will not contest the upcoming FIA presidency election, leaving Mohammed Ben Sulayem unopposed as he seeks another term. The two-time World Rally Championship winner had been considering a bid against Ben Sulayem but confirmed his decision to step away from the race later this year. This marks a significant development in the leadership dynamics of the international motorsport governing body.

Factors Influencing Sainz’s Decision

He emphasized the complexities of leading such a multifaceted organization under “present circumstances” that he felt were not conducive to his candidacy. Moreover, he expressed concern that pursuing the FIA presidency would interfere with his rigorous commitments to preparing for the Dakar Rally and his obligations to the Ford team.

In an open social media letter, Sainz wrote,

“Hi everyone, this message is to publicly confirm that I have finally decided not to run for the presidency of the FIA in this year’s election,”

he posted, continuing,

“I have worked hard these past months to understand in depth the situation at the FIA and the demands and complexities that come with such an important project. After a thoughtful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy.”

He also addressed the risk that running for president would detract from his Dakar preparations, stating,

“Furthermore, I have realised that properly running for President would notably compromise my preparation for the Dakar and I do not wish to weaken my commitment to Ford and my team.”
