Carlos Sainz fined €20,000 for anthem delay at Japanese GP despite illness, €10,000 suspended for a year per FIA rules.

Carlos Sainz has been penalized €20,000 by the FIA stewards for his late arrival to the national anthem before the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix. The Williams driver, dealing with a stomach upset, failed to arrive on time for the anthem presentation at Suzuka, thereby breaching Article 19.4 b) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. While €10,000 of this fine is suspended for a year, the situation unfolded despite Dr. Messina from Med-Ex confirming Sainz’s health issue and administering medication.

The incident occurred when the driver arrived at the anthem position after it had started. Stewards noted during Friday’s Drivers’ Briefing that all drivers were reminded of the necessity to be punctual and respectful during the anthem ceremony. The obligation to be in place by 13:44 hrs was clearly emphasized, and the breach earned Sainz his penalty. However, given the circumstances, the stewards chose not to impose the usual €60,000 fine.

The stewards underscored the importance of respecting the host country’s anthem, urging all involved to anticipate such situations better. The event serves as a reminder of the high priority placed on protocol adherence at international events. Despite his health struggles, Carlos Sainz faces the immediate financial penalty, with the potential of a further €10,000 charge if further infractions occur within a year.
