Chris Gabehart: Don’t Underestimate Christopher Bell Despite Winless Streak

Christopher Bell has demonstrated remarkable driving skills from a young age, initially competing on dirt tracks before transitioning to asphalt, a background that has served him well in the NASCAR Cup Series. Although he missed the Championship 4 last year, Bell began this season with a 31st place finish at Daytona before securing three consecutive victories at Atlanta, Circuit of the Americas (COTA), and Phoenix.

Despite not adding to his win total over the last 22 races, Bell’s presence remains notable. Across 26 regular-season races, he has earned nine top-five finishes, 14 top-10s, and finished as runner-up in four events, showing that his No. 20 Toyota team maintains impressive speed even without recent wins.

Endorsements from Joe Gibbs Racing Leadership

Chris Gabehart, Director of Competition for Joe Gibbs Racing, warned competitors not to overlook Bell’s persistence and talent. On the Motor Racing Network, alongside hosts Steve Post and Todd Gordon, Gabehart emphasized Bell’s potential despite his current winless streak.

We’ve seen it time and time again from that group, getting hot at the right time and really just able to capitalize on any given moment, any given week. So, they’ve definitely hit a stretch here where that’s not happened, but the performance has been there.

He highlighted Bell’s strong runs on road courses, noting a recent second-place finish at Watkins Glen, and referenced JGR’s consistent strength on these tracks, including a win at COTA and multiple near victories where Bell played a key role.

Challenges and Resilience on the Track

At Dover, Bell appeared on track to win once again but lost control while trying to pass a teammate, resulting in a costly spin. This incident reflected Bell’s aggressive but respectful racing style. Gabehart further commented on the importance of focusing on performance rather than results alone, given the unpredictable nature of race outcomes.

But I say all that to say, I think the performance is there. And Todd, as you know, the performance is what you really have to measure because the results can be really, really fickle. And that team’s just got to stay the course, and I think they’ll be just fine.

Track Record and Eyes on Future Championships

Over his six seasons at NASCAR’s highest level, Bell has been a consistent contender, missing the playoffs only during his rookie year in 2020 with Leavine Family Racing. The 30-year-old driver has consistently finished seasons inside the top five, including making the Championship 4 in both 2022 and 2023.

Bell’s playoff runs have sometimes been hampered by controversies, such as the penalty at Martinsville last season following a move reminiscent of Ross Chastain’s disallowed “Hail Melon” maneuver, which dropped him from 18th to 22nd and prevented a third consecutive appearance in the final four.

As the new postseason approaches, Christopher Bell remains focused on turning his strong performances into breakthrough victories, solidifying his status as a consistent contender within NASCAR.
