On the 52nd lap, Bell led the outside lane while Buescher took the inside lane, but neither driver would complete another full lap under green. As teammates pushed their respective cars, Bell abruptly spun toward the inside as they exited Turns 1 and 2. Buescher followed suit, and both vehicles slammed into the walls—Buescher hitting with the driver’s door while Bell crashed nose-first into the inside wall, which was supposedly protected by a SAFER Barrier. The impact completely devastated the front of Bell’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
Denny Hamlin, who was pushing Bell at the time, expressed his confusion over the radio, saying,
What in the hell? We weren’t even up to speed yet.
Buescher, who suffered a less severe but still jarring impact, also remarked on the situation, stating, “That [expletive] hurt.”
Despite the incident’s severity, both drivers were fortunate to escape serious injury. They were thoroughly checked and released from the infield care center, although their racing day came to an abrupt end, with Buescher finishing 34th and Bell trailing behind in 35th place. Bell shared his experience, noting,
I think I feel really good. I don’t know, my HANS device, my seat, my belts, everything seemed like it did well. It was a big one, that’s for sure.”
In reflecting on the accident, Bell stated,
Whenever you’re the car getting pushed, you’re completely at the mercy of the guy behind you. Denny didn’t do anything wrong. You have to push, you have to push to be successful. It’s a product of the cars we race with this rules package.”
