Colton Herta Inches Closer to Formula 2 Move in Bid for F1 Dream

American racing driver Colton Herta is reportedly making strides toward joining Formula 2 as part of his plan to reach Formula 1. Ahead of the 2026 season, several Formula 2 teams have reportedly approached Herta, signaling a serious opportunity to gain the required experience and super license points for an eventual move to F1. This development comes after his IndyCar success and attempts to join Formula 1 through other avenues stalled.

Herta, who drives for Andretti Global in IndyCar and has won nine races so far, was long linked with the Cadillac Formula 1 team. However, plans for him to join Cadillac ended following the announcement that Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas would form their first F1 driver lineup. The new CEO of the team, Dan Towriss, stated that Herta’s insufficient super license points were a key reason behind the decision to exclude him.

Super License Points and the Importance of Formula 2

Moving into Formula 2 would allow Herta to earn the super license points necessary for his progression into Formula 1. If he secures a top-five finish in Formula 2 during the 2026 season, he would fulfill the minimum requirements to compete in F1. Currently, his position in the 2025 IndyCar standings suggests he may finish outside the top six, which means he might earn only 37 of the 40 points needed for an F1 super license.

Herta’s Response to Formula 1 Speculation

When asked about the rumors linking him to Formula 1, Colton Herta responded cautiously during a media interaction. The 25-year-old from California acknowledged the speculation but chose not to comment extensively, indicating that the attention might even help raise his profile.

“Oh boy, I don’t really have any comments for any of that stuff, to be honest. It does, but it also makes people talk about me more. Maybe even raises my stock a little,” he said via AP

Having spent part of his junior career racing in Europe, Herta’s potential return to the continent through Formula 2 appears increasingly likely. This move could strategically position him to meet the requirements and gain the experience expected of Formula 1 rookies.

Broader Context: IndyCar Drivers and Formula 1 Prospects

Colton Herta is not alone in being linked to an F1 switch from IndyCar. Reports have emerged suggesting Red Bull Racing considered bringing Alex Palou aboard to partner with Max Verstappen, though these discussions have since been dismissed by both parties. Palou, a four-time champion in IndyCar, appears set to remain in American open-wheel racing, much like Herta for now.

While Herta’s immediate future does not include a direct jump to Formula 1, his pursuit of a seat through Formula 2 highlights the complexities and challenges drivers face in advancing to the pinnacle of motorsport. As the driver market continues to shift rapidly, observers will be keen to watch how Herta’s strategy unfolds and whether he can secure the necessary super license points and experience to achieve his F1 ambitions.
