Dennis Hauger Sees Big Promise in IndyCar Debut Test

Norwegian racing driver Dennis Hauger is preparing for his transition to the IndyCar Series after signing with Dale Coyne Racing for the 2026 season. Hauger completed his first IndyCar test on October 1 at the Mid-Ohio Road Course, marking a key milestone ahead of his much-anticipated Dennis Hauger IndyCar debut.

Having risen through European open-wheel championships and the FIA Formula ladder, Hauger made a strategic move to the United States in 2025 to compete in Andretti Global’s Indy NXT programme. His outstanding early-season performances, including victories in the first two races, quickly established him as a frontrunner in the series, leading to his eventual IndyCar opportunity.

Transition from European Circuits to American Open-Wheel Racing

Before joining Indy NXT, Dennis Hauger’s racing career was concentrated mainly on European tracks, where he honed his skills within the Red Bull Junior Team and competed in FIA Formula 2 during 2024. Opting to shift focus to the U.S. motorsport ladder, the 22-year-old embraced new challenges presented by American racing, including the distinctive oval tracks and tire characteristics.

Throughout the 14-race Indy NXT season, Hauger claimed six wins and stood on the podium eleven times, demonstrating consistent speed and adaptability. Meanwhile, Dale Coyne Racing had two openings for the 2026 IndyCar roster after Rinus VeeKay departed and Jacob Abel’s contract concluded after just one season. This created the perfect opportunity for Hauger to step up to the premier series.

First Impressions from Testing with Dale Coyne Racing

During his initial test at Mid-Ohio, Hauger expressed enthusiasm about racing in an IndyCar, reflecting on its significance for his career development and the promising pace he demonstrated. He described the experience as

“an amazing experience being in an INDYCAR SERIES car for the first time,”

underscoring the importance of getting accustomed to new machinery and team dynamics.

Hauger added,

“A lot of positives to take from the test. We showed really good pace. The main thing for me is getting the maximum out of the new tires. Still just exploring, learning, and figuring a few things out every session. Looking forward to the next one and building from that.”

This focus on tire management and continuous learning will be critical as he adapts to the demands of IndyCar racing.

Significance of Indy NXT Experience in Preparing for IndyCar

Dennis Hauger emphasized how his time in Indy NXT was crucial for acclimating to the unique aspects of American open-wheel racing.

“I think it was really important for me to be in INDY NXT this past year in preparation for INDYCAR. Just learning the tracks, the style of the teams over here, the environments, the people and how they work. Mainly the tracks – the ovals — quite a lot of new things I learned that can translate into the INDYCAR SERIES,”

he explained.

This period allowed him to gain familiarity not only with the circuit layouts, including oval racing that is absent in European series, but also with team operations and the broader racing culture in North America. Such insights are expected to give him a competitive edge as he transitions into the top tier of American open-wheel racing.

Outlook for Hauger’s Debut Season and Beyond

Hauger is scheduled to make his official IndyCar debut at the season-opening race in St. Petersburg on March 1, 2026. Between now and his first race, further test sessions with Dale Coyne Racing will offer additional time to adapt and refine his driving in the INDYCAR SERIES environment.

His move comes at a time when Dale Coyne Racing is also strengthening ties with Andretti Global through a technical alliance, which potentially enhances the support and resources available to the team’s drivers. This collaboration could prove beneficial as Hauger embarks on his rookie campaign in one of the world’s most competitive open-wheel series.

For motorsports fans and observers, Dennis Hauger’s progression from a European formula prospect to a promising IndyCar rookie represents a compelling story of adaptability and ambition. His eagerness to learn, combined with strong early performances and a solid testing foundation, suggests he could quickly become a notable competitor in the series.

With his debut on the horizon, Hauger is poised to embark on a new chapter in his racing career that blends his European experience with the unique challenges of American oval and road course racing. His journey will be closely watched by enthusiasts who follow IndyCar and open-wheel racing worldwide.
