Denny Hamlin Reveals 23XI Racing Was Almost Named 6XI After Michael Jordan’s Six Rings

Co-owner Denny Hamlin shared that 23XI Racing was initially going to have a different name, inspired by Michael Jordan’s championship legacy. The team’s current name combines Jordan’s famous number 23 from his Chicago Bulls career with Hamlin’s longtime racing number 11, which he has used throughout his 21 years with Joe Gibbs Racing. However, the original concept was to name the team 6XI, referencing Jordan’s six NBA championship rings.

Hamlin Explains Why the Name Was Changed

On his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin detailed the early stages of the team’s branding.

“Truth be known, the original name of 23XI racing was supposed to be 6XI. The six would have come from Jordan’s six rings with the Chicago Bulls,”

he said. Hamlin noted that renderings and gear initially carried the 6XI branding, but they eventually decided to rethink the name.

“6XI was our team name for a while, but I just, I was like, eh, let’s change. Let’s rethink.”

Recent Performance and Upcoming Absence

Hamlin recently secured his third victory of the season at Michigan, solidifying his status as one of the playoff favorites heading into the NASCAR Cup Series postseason. Despite this success, Hamlin will miss the upcoming race in Mexico City as he welcomes the birth of his first son with his fiancée. This personal milestone will take precedence as he takes time away from competition.

Ongoing Legal Challenges for 23XI Racing

The team currently faces legal uncertainties after the U.S. Court of Appeal allowed NASCAR to revoke the charter status of 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports. Hamlin was cautious when addressing this issue, stating:

“We are committed to running this season as an open team if required, even before the injunction decision.”

The outcome of these legal proceedings could have significant implications for the team’s future participation and operational status.
