Ducati Doubts Superbike Edge in MotoGP’s Pirelli Tyre Revolution

Ducati’s general manager, Gigi Dall’Igna, has expressed doubts that the company’s strong Superbike record will offer advantages when MotoGP switches to Pirelli tyres in 2027. This shift follows Michelin’s exit after nearly a decade as MotoGP’s tyre supplier, with Pirelli stepping in to lead the new chapter of tyre provision. The upcoming transition coincides with updated 850cc engine regulations, creating considerable expectations for changes in race dynamics.

The Tyre Change as a Major Factor in the Upcoming MotoGP Transition

Dall’Igna highlighted that the change of tyre supplier could be more pivotal than the new technical regulations themselves. During a media event at the Misano circuit, he noted,

“Honestly speaking, the most important change will not be the rule change, it will be the tyre change.”

This view reflects concerns from several engineers who predict that the characteristics of the new Pirelli tyres will have a greater influence on performance than the revised motorcycles.

He also emphasized the challenge of adapting to the Pirelli tyres, saying,

“We have a different tyre supplier starting from ’27, and for sure this could make a big step in overall performance. You have to understand what that tyre needs to go fast.”

This underlines the necessity for teams to thoroughly comprehend the new tyre properties to optimize their setups effectively.

Distinct Differences Between MotoGP and Superbike Tyres Limit Transferable Knowledge

Despite Ducati’s successes using Pirelli tyres in World Superbike racing, Dall’Igna expressed skepticism about this experience easing their transition in MotoGP. He stated,

“Honestly, I don’t think so.”

He explained that substantial differences in tyre dimensions and construction mean the new MotoGP tyres will not resemble those used in Superbike competition, adding,

“For sure, the tyres will be different from the Superbike.”

Dall’Igna also acknowledged that the Superbike tyre technology would influence MotoGP’s approach since Pirelli’s development stems largely from their Superbike expertise:

“But of course, the technology that Pirelli has at its disposal is Superbike technology. And so, for sure, the trend will be this.”

He further pointed out that other manufacturers have similar experience with Pirelli in Superbike racing, indicating a level playing field:

“But also Yamaha in Superbike, Honda is in Superbike, so we are not the only one.”

This suggests Ducati will face strong competition from rivals who also understand the tyre dynamics.

Implications of the Pirelli Tyre Revolution for MotoGP Competition

As the 2027 season approaches, Ducati and other teams face significant uncertainty surrounding how the MotoGP Pirelli tyre revolution will reshape the sport. The combined effect of new tyre supplier dynamics and regulatory changes promises to alter competitive balance, forcing all manufacturers to adapt quickly. Observers anticipate a potential shakeup in the championship hierarchy, as teams who best interpret and leverage the new tyres may gain a critical edge.

The move to Pirelli marks a dramatic departure from the Michelin era of MotoGP, requiring fresh technical strategies and adjustments. Whether Ducati can translate its superbike experience into MotoGP success remains an open question as engineers and riders prepare for this challenging transition. The motorsport community awaits the start of the new era with great interest, knowing the stakes have never been higher for all participants.
