Fabio Quartararo took part in a two-day private testing session at Misano with Yamaha ahead of the British MotoGP Grand Prix. Although the main emphasis during the tests was not on the engine, the team is preparing further enhancements following updates already introduced at Le Mans. This ongoing development highlights Yamaha’s commitment to improving performance throughout the 2025 season.
Focus on Aerodynamics and Chassis Adjustments
Quartararo offered insights into the objectives of the Misano testing session. He explained,
“We tested some new aero, we tested new electronic settings, but basically it was mainly the aero. We had two days, but it was raining in the first day and we only had the afternoon. But it was mainly testing and also checking some chassis setups. That’s it. There weren’t many things to test.”
This indicates that Yamaha prioritized aerodynamic refinements and chassis adjustments over other technical changes at Misano.
New Aero Developments Not Expected at British GP
Despite positive results from the aero tests, Quartararo confirmed that the new parts would not be ready in time for the upcoming British GP. He noted,
“I don’t think so. We tested new aero that, for me, was positive, but I don’t think we will use it because they need almost a month to make it.”
Accordingly, these aero improvements are likely to be introduced in later rounds rather than immediately.
Engine Enhancements to Arrive During the Season
Regarding Yamaha’s engine progress, Quartararo described the current advantages as modest but perceptible. He highlighted the contrast with competitors like Ducati, stressing Yamaha’s deficit in aero strength and power. He said,
“We already felt the benefit in Le Mans. But it’s really small compared to what we are missing – especially because we tried a different aero which was much better in some areas. Compared to Ducati, we are really, really light in aero. So, I can imagine how much Ducati can feel the aero and how powerful the engine is. This is something we are still missing, and I think we will have a new engine soon hopefully – I don’t know when, but during the season we will have a new four inline.”
Implications for Yamaha’s Competitive Edge
The upcoming engine update represents a crucial step for Yamaha as it strives to close the performance gap with rivals, particularly Ducati, whose aerodynamics and power currently set a high standard. While immediate changes at the British GP are unlikely, Quartararo’s statements suggest significant enhancements will arrive during the season, potentially improving Yamaha’s competitiveness in key track areas. Continued aero testing combined with the planned engine development could have considerable effects on the team’s results as the MotoGP season progresses.
