Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia has spoken out about the ongoing contract dispute involving Jorge Martin and the Aprilia racing team, urging the MotoGP world champion to honor his existing agreement. The controversy emerged after reports that Martin sought to activate a break clause to end his contract early, potentially allowing him to leave Aprilia at the end of the current season.
Aprilia, however, maintains their stance that Martin is committed to the team until at least the close of 2026. Bagnaia supports this position, emphasizing the importance of honoring contracts in professional racing.
The dispute over contract terms and its wider implications
Bagnaia commented ahead of the British MotoGP race that once a contract is signed, it carries binding obligations.
“I was expecting Aprilia to say they signed a contract, because when you sign a contract, you need to follow it, you cannot cancel it,”
he explained. He expressed concern about the disruption caused by speculation surrounding the dispute.
He noted the challenges created by rumors on social media, making it difficult to discern fact from fiction regarding the situation.
“But I think if you sign a contract, you should respect it. It is not correct to exit it from it,”
Bagnaia said.
On his own experience with contracts, Bagnaia added,
“I always decided for my future and I always wanted to respect it. It is true that in the past there have been times when maybe I wanted to change, but it is not correct.”
He compared honoring a contract to maintaining a marriage, stressing the effort required to make such agreements work.
“You have to do the maximum to solve the problem. It is like a marriage, if you decide to go forward, you must be at your maximum to make yourself happy.”
Fabio Quartararo reflects on Martin’s mental challenges amid the dispute
Meanwhile, MotoGP star Fabio Quartararo has weighed in on Martin’s situation, highlighting the mental struggles riders can face when sidelined due to injury or uncertain futures. He warned that such periods can lead to difficult thoughts for athletes battling to recover and plan their careers.

Quartararo avoided taking sides but acknowledged the strain Martin may be under.
“I don’t really want to put myself in a position against Jorge, or against Aprilia, or against any brand,”
he said, before adding,
“But what I know is that mentally, when you suffer so much mentally from injuries, things can happen in your head, many things.”
The French rider also pointed out that Martin had multiple options available before choosing Aprilia, framing the current situation as a decision still in the hands of Martin and the team.
“He has signed a contract. I see him, without doing a race, I see him just following. But as I said, mentally, I think he is going through the most difficult moment of his career. And you can understand that sometimes you can think about crazy things.”
Contract disputes’ impact on the MotoGP landscape
The ongoing dispute between Martin and Aprilia threatens to unsettle the team environment during a critical part of the MotoGP season. Bagnaia’s call for honoring contracts underlines a wider concern within the racing community about maintaining professionalism amid uncertain negotiations and rumors.
Martin’s desire to leave Aprilia early could complicate team dynamics, affecting both his performance and the efforts of other riders like Bagnaia and Quartararo. As the situation develops, it may influence decisions by teams and riders across the paddock, highlighting the delicate balance between contract commitments and career ambitions.
The resolution of this dispute will be closely watched, given Martin’s status as a world champion and the importance of Aprilia’s plans going forward. How this situation unfolds could set precedents for future rider–team negotiations in MotoGP.
