George Russell and Mercedes Smash EV Distance Records in 24 Hours

Mercedes-AMG, joined by Formula 1 driver George Russell, has set multiple electric vehicle distance records at Italy’s Nardò test track with the Concept AMG GT XX. This breakthrough feat involved driving the concept car for 24 hours, highlighting Mercedes’ commitment to pushing EV technology to new extremes.

Historic Distance Achievement at Nardò

The Concept AMG GT XX covered an astonishing 5,479 kilometres (3,404 miles) within a single day, surpassing the previous 24-hour record of 3,961 kilometres. This milestone was part of Mercedes’ ambitious

“around the world in eight days”

goal, showcasing the ability of electric vehicles to sustain long-distance high-speed driving over extended periods.

Expanding on this, two identical cars jointly traveled 40,075 kilometres (24,901 miles) across seven days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and seven seconds. Despite stopping 40 times for ultra-fast charging, they maintained a consistent speed of 300 km/h (186 mph), carefully chosen as the optimal pace for endurance and performance.

Advanced Powertrain and Vehicle Technology

The Concept AMG GT XX is powered by three cutting-edge axial flux electric motors, delivering more than 1000 kW (1,360 horsepower) at peak output. Two motors drive the rear axle while one is positioned at the front, providing strategic torque boosts depending on the driving conditions. This advanced setup allows for immediate and precise power delivery tailored to the driver’s style.

Driver Impressions and Industry Insights

George Russell, one of several drivers involved in the record attempts, expressed high regard for the vehicle’s capabilities:

“As an F1 driver, I’m used to pushing technology to its absolute limits – the Concept AMG GT XX really impressed me,

Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ chief technology officer, emphasized the historical importance of the Nardò track for the brand and the significance of this new chapter:

“Now, with the CONCEPT AMG GT XX technology programme, we are entering a new dimension of performance – this time with fully electric drive. The goal is to redefine the limits of what is technically possible in the age of electric drives. So what could be more fitting than to go chasing records once again?”

Setting a New Standard for Electric Vehicles

This achievement not only underlines the potential of Mercedes-AMG’s electric powertrain but also demonstrates the endurance and efficiency of EV technology at extreme speeds and long distances. The success at Nardò signals a shift in performance EV capabilities, promising advances for both high-speed motorsport and everyday electric driving.

With the George Russell Mercedes EV record drawing significant attention, Mercedes-AMG sets a benchmark that will influence the future design and engineering of electric vehicles, combining race-grade technology with real-world usability.
