Ida Zetterström Shines in Historic NHRA Final Run

Ida Zetterström, the 2023 FIA European Top Fuel champion, made a breakthrough appearance in the NHRA Top Fuel final at the Midwest Nationals held at World Wide Technology Raceway. Despite facing tire difficulties during the final round, she delivered a notable performance, finishing second to veteran Doug Kalitta in a contest that highlighted her growing potential in the NHRA circuit.

Strong Qualifying and Elimination Performances

Zetterström secured her spot in the final after posting a best qualifying pass of 3.788 seconds at 328.78 mph, placing her 13th on the grid. Throughout the elimination rounds, she demonstrated remarkable skill and consistency, including an exceptional reaction time against former champion Tony Stewart, helping her advance confidently through the field.

Challenges in the Final Against Kalitta

In the final round, tire issues hampered Zetterström’s Top Fuel run, slowing her to a 4.110-second finish at 282.01 mph, which was not enough to surpass Kalitta’s winning time. Although the runner-up result marks a significant achievement for her and her team, it also revealed areas for improvement regarding handling and consistency under pressure against elite drivers like Kalitta.

Looking Ahead to Future Races

Following this landmark race, Zetterström is actively seeking funding to support a full 2026 racing campaign, capitalizing on the momentum gained from the Midwest Nationals. She is scheduled to compete next at the Texas NHRA FallNationals from October 10-12, where she aims to build upon her recent success and further establish herself as a top contender in the series.

Significance for Zetterström’s NHRA Career

Ida Zetterström’s rapid progression signals a promising future in Top Fuel drag racing. Her historic appearance in the NHRA final underscores her skills and the potential of her team, positioning her as a driver to watch in the upcoming events. This milestone run not only boosts her profile but also lays a foundation for sustained competitiveness in the demanding NHRA landscape.
