Isack Hadjar Urged to Cheer Up Despite Strong F1 Debut as Self-Critical Nature Persists

Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar has been encouraged to adopt a more positive outlook after an impressive entry into Formula 1 this season. The French-Algerian driver currently ranks 11th in the drivers‘ standings, having accumulated 22 points in 13 races, showcasing his rapid adaptation to the sport’s highest level. Despite this, Hadjar’s persistent self-critical mindset has caused him to question his own abilities.

Self-Doubt Remains Despite Clear Evidence of Talent

Hadjar shared that the pressure of competing in Formula 1 weighs heavily on him, even though he acknowledges his skill level.

“If you make it to F1, then it’s not by luck, so obviously you know you’re quite OK. But at the same time, you always have doubts, and it’s normal,”

he said before the Hungarian Grand Prix. He admitted to questioning whether he is “good enough” due to his relatively limited experience, but he has come to terms with the speed and demands of F1 quicker than expected.

Mentorship and Mental Strength Crucial in Career Progression

Reflecting on his journey, Hadjar highlighted the importance of guidance during difficult periods. His seasons before F1 were marked by challenges, especially during a tough year in Formula 2 with the Hitech team, where he doubted if he could reach the top tier. He credited Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko with helping him regain confidence when he was close to giving up.

“But thankfully I had very strong support from Helmut. He kept believing and gave me a second chance, which I took. So as well as mental strength – obviously, because you need to not give up in those moments – you need strong people around and people that trust in you, and this is what I had. Really good people around who believed in me, and that’s how I got back up, basically.”

Team Encouragement Needed to Offset Self-Critical Tendencies

Hadjar’s tendency to be harsh on himself remains noticeable, especially after strong performances. He explained that when he knows he could have done better, he often dwells on imperfections.

“It’s just that when I have a very good result and I know there was more left on the table and I could have done a better job, I tend to not be – I’m self-critical a lot,”

he disclosed.

His team has recognized this trait and urged him to show more enthusiasm and positivity for the benefit of the entire crew.

“I’ve been told by my entourage I need to cheer up a bit more because the mechanics, the engineers, they need to hear positive things. But I can tell you, when I do the job and I’m happy with myself, if there’s someone that celebrates and goes crazy, it’s me. But it’s quite rare.”

Future Prospects and Challenges for Hadjar in Formula 1

Isack Hadjar’s early success in Formula 1 reflects a remarkable adaptation to one of the most demanding sports internationally. However, his ongoing self-criticism highlights the mental pressures young drivers face in sustaining and improving performance. With strong backing from Red Bull figures like Helmut Marko and support from his team, Hadjar is positioned to mature both on and off the track, with expectations high for his continued growth.
