In a recent interview with Kevin Harvick, Johnson described how their contrasting roles within the team—Knaus as the enforcer and Johnson as the calmer figure—complemented each other for many years, until tensions eventually made their working relationship unsustainable.
“He was the bad cop. I was the good cop within the team. By the way, he did so much pushing that I didn’t need to. But I knew the way he pushed others, he expected that from me. And I felt I needed to take some stress off of him and I made sure that I had my s**t together and that was the responsibility I took in hand. He nudged me occasionally. There were certainly moments where it got heated and Rick would have to get involved,” Johnson described. [11:00]
Johnson stressed that for the longest time, their rivalry was never personal. The intense pressure they placed on one another fueled their achievements and allowed them to reach unprecedented heights in NASCAR. This healthy push and pull, however, began to change over the final two to three seasons of Johnson’s tenure with Hendrick Motorsports.
“It became personal like I was afraid and frustrated that my career wasn’t winding down the way that I wanted it to. Chad the same. And so where we were always aligned and never kind of personally attacked each other, we started to indirectly,” he mentioned.
Johnson explained that this shift wasn’t deliberate but slowly became personal, which ultimately affected their performance. Rick Hendrick stepped in to separate the pair, recognizing the need to protect the team and preserve Johnson’s career trajectory.
“It wasn’t something that we intended to do, but it became personal and that eroded away at our success more than anything. And then, eventually, Rick separated us.”

Following the split with Chad Knaus, 2019 saw Kevin Meendering take over as Johnson’s crew chief. However, Meendering’s tenure was short-lived; by midseason, Cliff Daniels replaced him in a bid to salvage Johnson’s faltering year. Johnson admitted that these changes were difficult to handle, especially as he had hoped to finish his career with Knaus guiding him.
Johnson described the relationship with Knaus toward the end as “toxic and tough,” which impacted not only their connection but the entire team dynamic at Hendrick Motorsports. Although the new crew chiefs brought fresh perspectives, Johnson acknowledged that the era of his initial success had passed.
“I could see when Cliff came in, I grew up in a certain kind of system and Cliff is that guy and I needed that that pressure from Cliff. All that being said, there were a lot of great learning moments in that. But when the 2020 season started, I just knew that my fire had gone out in a lot of ways. And I just couldn’t go any further,” Johnson said. [13:40]
Despite recognizing Cliff Daniels’ ability to build a competitive team, Johnson admitted he had lost the drive to continue pursuing a record-breaking eighth Cup title. The shift away from his longtime teammate and the struggles that followed deeply affected his motivation during the final stages of his racing career.
