Jimmie Johnson Confident Daniel Suarez Will Secure Strong NASCAR Ride Despite Current Uncertainty

Jimmie Johnson expressed confidence in Daniel Suarez’s prospects of finding a competitive NASCAR ride, despite the uncertainty following Suarez’s departure from Trackhouse Racing. Johnson emphasized the value of Suarez’s race-winning experience and international appeal as key factors in securing future opportunities.

Since the split between Suarez and Trackhouse Racing, speculation has mounted regarding his next move. Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently commented on Suarez’s situation, advising that he needs to “be more aggressive” to secure a seat for the upcoming season. Contrasting this perspective, Johnson provided a more hopeful outlook on Suarez’s chances.

Jimmie Johnson Shares Optimism About Suarez’s Future in NASCAR

The seven-time NASCAR Cup champion noted that it is still early in the negotiation period and expressed belief that Suarez will not be left without options. Johnson said,

“I don’t think Daniel is going to be out. It’s never fun to be looking for a job, but it is early in the process. I think there’s going to be a lot of movement as there is most years. I think he’ll have some strong options to consider,” —Jimmie Johnson

“I don’t think he’s out of a Cup car. He’s a recent race-winning Cup driver. There’s always going to be room for someone like that, on top of his sponsor appeal and international appeal. I’m confident he’ll find a very solid ride to compete in,” he added.

Johnson also clarified that Legacy Motor Club’s efforts to obtain a third charter do not align with Suarez’s timeline for finding a new seat. Throughout the current season, Suarez has struggled to match the results of his Trackhouse teammates Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen, who have both clinched playoff spots. Suarez’s best performance this year came with a runner-up finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, while his last Cup Series victory was at the Ambetter Health 400 in Atlanta last year.

Jimmie Johnson Considers a Return to Cup Racing in San Diego

As a San Diego native, Johnson is contemplating a return to Cup Series competition next season, especially with the introduction of a new NASCAR street race at the US Navy base in Coronado. He views this as a unique chance to race in front of a hometown crowd. When asked about the possibility, Johnson shared,

“Definitely intrigues me. Obviously it’s new news. But the desire to race in my hometown is off the charts. I will aggressively work on being in the event.”

Johnson also mentioned that he plans to participate in the event in some capacity, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. His most recent Cup race was the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, marking his 700th Cup Series start. Despite crashing early and finishing last in that event, Johnson remains hopeful for more appearances next year, especially if Legacy Motor Club secures a third charter.

His previous season opener, the Daytona 500, saw Johnson finish in third place, highlighting his continued competitiveness despite a reduced schedule. With NASCAR evolving and new opportunities emerging, Johnson’s interest in competing again in his hometown reflects his passion for the sport and racing legacy.

Overall, Jimmie Johnson’s support for Daniel Suarez underscores his belief in the driver’s continued relevance in the Cup Series, while his own tentative return to racing in San Diego adds to the excitement as NASCAR expands its reach with new venues and events.
