Jimmie Johnson, co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, is actively scouting promising drivers in the NASCAR Xfinity Series as he aims to expand the Statesville, North Carolina-based team. Johnson intends to increase the organization’s presence from two NASCAR Cup Series teams to three by 2027, though the launch of the third team may be postponed from next year to 2027. Amid this growth, Johnson is targeting Xfinity standouts Jesse Love and rookie Connor Zilisch as prime candidates to drive the new entry.
Love currently sits fourth in the drivers’ standings heading into the Chicago Street Race, trailing leader Justin Allgaier by 83 points. Throughout 17 races this season, Love has secured one victory alongside 11 top-10 finishes, demonstrating consistent performance.
Justin Allgaier Leads Championship Favoritism Among Contenders
Justin Allgaier remains the frontrunner for the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, holding the top betting odds at +170 according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Following closely is Connor Zilisch, who boasts commendable credentials with two wins and eight top-10 finishes. Zilisch, who earned his first Xfinity win at Watkins Glen last September, carries the second-best title odds at +450, ranking fifth in the points standings.
Meanwhile, Legacy Motor Club’s current drivers, Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, have yet to claim a victory in 18 races this season, creating an added incentive for Johnson to identify new talent for his team’s expansion.
Johnson’s Vision for Future Driver Lineup and Team Growth
Speaking on the Ask Jimmie podcast, Johnson expressed his ambition:
“It’s our intentions and ambitions to put a third car on the grid in 2026,”
he said.
“I’d say worst case scenario, ’27, but we’re working hard to make ‘26 happen.”
Johnson highlighted the depth of talent progressing through Toyota’s development pipeline, which feeds the Xfinity Series and other platforms.
Johnson added,
“There’s just questions in my mind and especially wearing my team owner’s hat, we’re looking to add a third car and hoping to get some news soon on that, but where to look, it’s tough.”
His remarks underline both the challenge and opportunity in sourcing the right drivers to strengthen Legacy Motor Club’s lineup amid NASCAR’s evolving competition.
