Johann Zarco Confident in Securing 2026 Honda MotoGP Factory Team Seat Amid Fierce Competition

Johann Zarco, the two-time MotoGP race winner, remains optimistic about securing a seat on Honda’s factory team in 2026 as he carefully assesses where he can best serve as HRC’s lead rider. Having joined the LCR Honda team with a two-year deal starting in 2024 after leaving Ducati’s Pramac squad, Zarco has positioned himself as a key figure within Honda’s MotoGP efforts.

Despite Honda’s challenging performance in 2024, Zarco stood out as the top rider for the brand by season’s end and has continued to solidify his status as the team’s clear number one in 2025. Early in the season, he consistently achieved top-five finishes in dry conditions and broke Honda’s two-year winless streak by triumphing at the rain-affected French Grand Prix.

As Zarco approaches the conclusion of his current contract, he has openly expressed ambitions to step up to Honda’s factory squad in 2026. However, this coveted position faces strong competition from riders like Pedro Acosta and reigning world champion Jorge Martin, who is reportedly seeking to exit his contract with Aprilia.

Zarco weighs options amid high demand for Honda factory seat

In an exclusive interview conducted at the British Grand Prix, Zarco conveyed confidence in his ability to secure the Honda factory seat despite the rivalry. His current discussions focus on identifying the best role where he can effectively lead Honda’s MotoGP project, whether that entails remaining with LCR or advancing to the factory team.

“I think yes, but we are really discussing with Lucio, with HRC, and what can be the best,”

Zarco said when questioned about the likelihood of joining the factory squad for 2026. He acknowledged,

“I know I can have the best bike even in the LCR team,”

but emphasized the importance of assuming the responsibility that comes with the position of Honda’s team leader.

He reflected on the balance they are trying to achieve.

“Can I have this position staying in the LCR team? That’s really what we are trying to balance,”

Zarco explained, underlining that continuing with Honda remains the primary goal, whatever the team situation.

Honesty and transparency have marked these talks between Zarco, Lucio, and Honda.

“It’s nice to not need to hide things between each other, Lucio, Honda, myself,”

he said, highlighting the open communication.

“So, we are trying to evaluate what the best [for me] is and also the Honda project with Lucio.”

So, that’s what we are speaking on now.

Implications for Honda and Zarco’s career trajectory

Zarco’s role as Honda’s leading rider and his potential promotion to the factory team carry significant implications for both him and the manufacturer. His leadership could help Honda build momentum as it looks to return to championship-winning form after recent difficulties. Meanwhile, the decision between remaining with LCR or moving to the factory squad will shape Zarco’s influence and resources in upcoming seasons.

With competition for the factory seat intense and key rivals pursuing Honda’s top ride, Zarco’s negotiations and results throughout 2025 will be decisive. His ability to secure the factory seat and take on the full mantle of Honda team leader could define the next phase of his MotoGP career and impact Honda’s strategy for 2026 and beyond.
