Jonathan Rea on Marc Marquez Comparison: “Changing Bikes Helped Him, But I Can’t Compare Myself”

Jonathan Rea has stated that he cannot directly compare his current situation with Yamaha to Marc Marquez’s final year at Honda before the latter switched to Ducati. Amid ongoing speculation about Rea’s next move, discussions within the World Superbike paddock ahead of the Balaton Park round in July have focused on possible options with Honda or Ducati for the 2026 season.

Marquez’s move to Ducati in 2024 was seen as a career revitalization following difficult seasons at Honda, particularly after his 2020 injury involving a fractured right humerus. Despite parallels drawn by observers, Rea insists that his circumstances and decisions differ significantly from Marquez’s.

Marc [Marquez] had horrible years in Honda and changing bikes helped him a lot,

Jonathan Rea said in an interview with Italian publication Motosprint.

But I can’t compare myself to him.

Rea Sets Timeline for Decision on WorldSBK Future

The 38-year-old, aiming to regain prominence in World Superbike, indicated that the upcoming Hungarian round at Balaton Park from July 25 to 27 will be crucial in defining his next career steps. This event precedes a six-week summer break, offering a natural deadline for Rea’s decision-making process.

Fortunately or unfortunately for me my season started late, so while Bulega and Toprak [Razgatlioglu] have already defined their future, and some teams have already clarified their plans for 2026, I told myself that after Balaton it will be time to define my [future],

Rea explained.

I’m very open-minded at the moment, trying both to give my best in the single weekend and to explore the possible scenarios.

After the Hungarian round, everything will have to be clearer.

Focus on Present Performance Despite Transfer Speculation

When asked about rumors linking him to Ducati, Rea avoided confirming any concrete plans. He emphasized the importance of concentrating on his current performance at Donington Park and the upcoming Balaton round instead of prematurely speculating about a team change.

I need to go out and do a really good job here, and at Balaton, and then worry about my future and what that looks like, and how I can see myself,

he said.

But I’m not thinking about anything else right now other than trying to maximise my potential and the bike.

Rea Acknowledges Untapped Potential with Yamaha

Rea also acknowledged that his current Yamaha setup holds more promise than his results have shown so far this season. He described the challenges as part of the process and expressed determination to continue working hard rather than giving up.

There is potential, he noted. The potential is so much better than we’re showing.

It’s just work and I can’t give up on myself. It’s just part and parcel, really.

Implications for Rea’s World Superbike Career Ahead

As the Balaton Park round approaches, Rea’s decision will shape the trajectory of his World Superbike career, potentially involving a move to Ducati or Honda. His cautious yet hopeful approach reflects the complexities of aligning team dynamics, bike performance, and personal goals at this stage of his professional journey. Following the Hungarian event, clearer insights into his plans are expected, marking a pivotal moment for one of the sport’s most accomplished riders.
