Aprilia team manager Paolo Bonora has confirmed that Jorge Martin will be sidelined for the upcoming Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, scheduled in two weeks. This Jorge Martin injury update follows the Spaniard’s collarbone fracture sustained during the sprint race in Japan last weekend, leaving him unable to compete in the rest of the Motegi event.
Details of the Crash and Recovery Process
Martin’s injury occurred when he lost control braking and collided with teammate Marco Bezzecchi, breaking his collarbone in two places. After the incident, Martin underwent surgery in Spain and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Bonora described the injury as severe and explained that the team remains cautious day-to-day as they monitor Martin’s healing.
“The surgery was very good [but] it’s a big injury for sure. We’re checking the recovery plan with the doctor. I can confirm for sure that he will not join us at Phillip Island, unfortunately,”
Bonora said. He added,
“We have to understand his physical situation day by day. It’s not a standard collarbone crack – [it is in] two places. So it’s necessary to wait.”
Support and Possible Timeline for Return
The Aprilia team has expressed full support for Martin during this difficult time.
“A big hug to Jorge, and I’d like to say to him that the whole team is close to him at this particular moment,”
Bonora shared.
MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte refrained from setting a firm return date, citing the need for careful assessment of Martin’s condition. However, he indicated the racer could potentially return before the season finale in Valencia this November. The earliest realistic expectation for Martin’s comeback is the Malaysian Grand Prix, which follows the Australian round.
Recent Injury Struggles and Racing Comeback
Martin’s 2024 campaign has been severely disrupted by multiple injuries, starting from preseason testing and culminating in a crash at the Qatar Grand Prix in April. He only rejoined competitive racing consistently at the Czech Grand Prix shortly before the summer break, making his current setback particularly challenging for both rider and team.
Looking Ahead: Uncertain Return Amid Ongoing Recovery
The situation around Jorge Martin’s injury remains tense and uncertain as the Aprilia squad waits for signs of sufficient recovery. While the Malaysian GP stands as the earliest possible event for Martin’s return, the team and medical staff emphasize patience and caution to avoid risking further harm. This careful approach reflects the high stakes involved in managing health and performance at this elite level of MotoGP.
