Jorge Martin will be unable to participate in the upcoming Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island after sustaining a serious injury. The reigning world champion suffered a displaced fracture to his right collarbone during the Motegi Sprint race last Saturday, resulting in surgery earlier this week in Spain.
Details of the Incident and Immediate Aftermath
Martin’s injury occurred when he misjudged the braking zone at turn one, causing him to lose control and crash into his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi. Bezzecchi escaped major harm, but Martin’s injury was severe enough to sideline him. Following surgery, the recovery timeline remains uncertain, casting doubt on his participation in upcoming flyaway races.
Paolo Bonora, Martin’s team manager, confirmed during Friday’s Mandalika practice that the rider would not be fit for Phillip Island from October 17-19.
“The surgery was very good. Now we are checking with the doctor the recovery plan to understand when he will come back to the racetrack,”
Bonora said.
He added,
“For sure I can confirm that in Phillip Island he will not join us, unfortunately. But we don’t know about the next future. So we have to wait for the medical examination to understand his physical situation day by day.”
Challenges Ahead for Martin’s Comeback
Martin’s injury is more serious than a typical collarbone fracture, involving two fracture sites.
“Because it was a big, big injury, not a standard collarbone crack, there was two places. So it’s necessary to wait. A big hug to Jorge and I want to say that all the team are close to him at the moment,”
Bonora said.
Missing Phillip Island raises questions about Martin’s recovery time for the Sepang race a week later, a venue associated with previous injuries from his February testing. The 2025 MotoGP season will end with rounds at Portimao and Valencia, but Martin’s chances of participating remain uncertain.
