There’s a common misconception in the Formula 1 community: many believe that rookie Kimi Antonelli was named after former champion Kimi Raikkonen. However, this is not the case. In fact, ‘Kimi’ isn’t even the Italian driver’s real name. His full name is Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli, with ‘Kimi’ being a foreign middle name chosen by a family friend, a decision that intrigued his parents.
Despite this, when Kimi Antonelli’s name appears in the paddock, it inevitably brings Raikkonen to mind for many fans. The Finn, once a highly regarded youngster, went on to become one of the top drivers on the grid. While Antonelli has yet to reach such heights, Raikkonen would seem a fitting figure to seek advice from, considering their shared name.
Interestingly, Antonelli had the opportunity to approach Raikkonen during the Italian GP weekend last year, when Mercedes announced Antonelli as their driver for 2025. Raikkonen was present in the paddock, yet Antonelli did not approach him. Perhaps this was due to a memorable encounter in 2018.
Recalling his first meeting with Raikkonen, Antonelli stated, “I met him when I was quite young, maybe 2018? The first time I met him, I understood why they called him the ‘Iceman’ – I was super excited and he did not react.”
Raikkonen, known for his monosyllabic and nonchalant demeanor in media interviews, often gives reserved and thoughtful responses, characteristic of Finnish conversational style. This approach stood out even in serious contexts, with Raikkonen notorious for responding with barely a few words.
Antonelli, however, remains eager for another encounter with the 2007 champion. “It would be cool to ask him about racing, as he has done a lot in the sport. Definitely one for the future!” the 18-year-old remarked.
A paddock appearance by Raikkonen, like the one at Monza last year, would provide Antonelli the perfect chance to have the conversation he desires. However, Raikkonen, now focused on his son’s racing career, has infrequently returned to the paddock since retiring in 2021. Consequently, Antonelli might have to wait for his sought-after interaction with Raikkonen.
