Toto Wolff acknowledged an error in accelerating Kimi Antonelli’s entrance into the Mercedes Formula 1 team, after the young driver made his debut during the first practice session at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. The decision, intended to spotlight Antonelli’s talent, sparked significant attention as he was hailed the next Max Verstappen and a promising racing prodigy.
Antonelli’s outing at Monza ended prematurely when he lost control of his car at Parabolica and crashed early in the session. Despite this setback, the Mercedes team and Wolff have publicly continued to support him. During the team principal press conference ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Wolff reflected on the timing of Antonelli’s debut, conceding that it may have imposed excessive pressure.
I think we have put Kimi under maximum pressure, to be honest,
