At Rockingham Speedway, JGR driver Taylor Gray expressed frustration as he blamed Kyle Busch‘s Chevrolet teammate, Parker Retzlaff, for a disappointing outcome. During the chaotic North Carolina Education Lottery 250, Gray was pursuing a podium finish but faced a critical setback on the final restart.
The race marked a significant return to NASCAR after over a decade, featuring 14 cautions for 83 laps and the drama of Jesse Love’s initial triumph being transferred to Sammy Smith due to a failed post-race inspection. Gray, who started 15th, initially seemed unlikely to finish strong. However, he climbed the ranks, earning a point in the second stage and advancing to fourth by Lap 166 of 256. In the final overtime restart, Gray lined up second, with Retzlaff in his #54 Toyota.
As the cars sped towards the checkered flag, Jesse Love, starting behind Sammy Smith, moved through the inside lane, shifting Smith up the track. Meanwhile, Retzlaff, driving the #4 Chevy, pushed behind Gray’s car, lifting his rear tires. Smith slid, and Gray, caught between Smith and Retzlaff, lost positions, ultimately finishing sixth. This prompted Gray’s criticism of Retzlaff’s actions.
Following Love’s penalty, which moved him to fifth, Gray secured his second top-five finish of the season, although it wasn’t without frustration. Retzlaff, who raced part-time for Beard Motorsports last season, had previously participated in significant events like the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. At Daytona, Kyle Busch needed a victory to secure his playoff spot. Retzlaff aimed to push Harrison Burton and seize an opportunity to win, but he ultimately aided Burton in securing the victory instead.
Retzlaff’s decision not to assist Kyle Busch drew criticism, given how beneficial his support might have been. Despite this, Busch clarified that he never expected assistance from Retzlaff since the latter wasn’t involved in Chevrolet’s primary driver meetings, indicating no apology was necessary.
