This special tribute coincides with the Throwback Weekend, reminding fans of the iconic 2003 Southern 500 victory by Labonte. Hall of Famer Terry Labonte is optimistic that Larson, driving the shared No. 5, could secure yet another triumph.
Expressing his enthusiasm last week when the paint scheme was unveiled, Labonte stated, “The most exciting part is having Kyle Larson drive it. I know going in that we have a shot to win. He just does a fantastic job everywhere he goes, every weekend.” Larson has already clinched a victory at Homestead-Miami this season, along with five top-10 finishes, positioning him as a strong contender to conquer the ‘Lady in Black’ on Sunday.
Historic and Challenging Venue
Darlington Raceway holds a special place in Labonte’s heart, being the venue where he celebrated both his first and last Cup Series victories. Reflecting on the track’s significance, he remarked, “Darlington Raceway is one of those places that’s just unbelievable to me. You look at the history and you look at all the people who have won races here — lots of things change, but it’s always just the same, old Darlington.” With 22 Cup Series wins and two championships under his belt (in 1984 and 1996), Labonte understands the complexities of navigating this challenging, egg-shaped oval.
Describing the challenges of racing at Darlington, Labonte added, “For drivers, it’s so unique because it’s so hard. When you can win at Darlington, it’s quite an accomplishment. It’s a pretty good accomplishment if you can run around here for 500 miles and not hit the wall. It’s so narrow and so easy to get caught up in somebody else’s accident.”
The Goodyear 400: A Test of Skill and Strategy
The upcoming Goodyear 400 will cover 400 miles, but it demands the same level of skill and endurance as the Southern 500. Hendrick Motorsports is hopeful, given that Larson already tasted victory at this track in the Southern 500 earlier in 2023. Achieving another win here isn’t beyond his reach.
