Kyle Larson’s Hendrick paint scheme is quickly earning a reputation as one of NASCAR’s most memorable designs, drawing comparisons to legendary cars from the sport’s history. Recently, Connor Zilisch, a Trackhouse Racing driver recovering from a collarbone injury, singled out Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet as an underrated paint scheme with the potential to achieve iconic status.
Zilisch praised the HendrickCars.com design, noting its frequent appearances across the racing circuit. He expressed confidence that if Larson continues his successful streak, his paint scheme might become as legendary as Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s famous Goodwrench #3 car.
“Just ’cause how iconic it is and how many races it has won. I think people underrate how cool it is to have a paint scheme for almost a whole season,”
Zilisch said.
The Enduring Legacy of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Paint Scheme
Dale Earnhardt Sr., known as “The Intimidator,” is closely linked to his sleek black Goodwrench paint scheme, which he drove from 1988 until the end of his career. This design became synonymous with Earnhardt’s lasting nickname, “The Man in Black,” and remains one of NASCAR’s most recognizable liveries. Zilisch believes Larson’s paint scheme could reach a similar level of fame because of its visibility and Larson’s continued success.
Larson’s Throwback Paint Scheme Earns Fan Accolades
In 2023, Larson’s No. 5 HendrickCars.com Throwback Chevrolet Camaro was voted the Best in Class Throwback Paint Scheme in the Cup Series during NASCAR’s throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway. The scheme was a tribute to Terry Labonte’s historic Kellogg’s design, honoring Labonte’s 1996 NASCAR Cup championship under the Hendrick Motorsports banner. Labonte, wearing his original firesuit, joined Larson on stage to celebrate the homage during driver introductions. This marked the third straight year Hendrick Motorsports secured a Best in Show award for its paint designs.
Looking Ahead: Larson’s Continued Success and Impact
Since winning the 2021 Cup Series championship, Larson has remained a key figure at Hendrick Motorsports under a contract that extends through 2026. Entering the 2025 playoffs, Larson leads the standings with a 26-point margin, highlighting his ongoing dominance. Meanwhile, Zilisch is expected to resume racing in the Xfinity Series following his recovery from a Watkins Glen injury. With Larson’s impressive resume and growing fan admiration for his paint scheme, the No. 5 Chevrolet is positioned not only for future victories but also for lasting significance in NASCAR history.
