Kyle Larson showed signs of a strong comeback with back-to-back top-10 finishes at New Hampshire and Kansas, but his performance remained far from the level he reached before Memorial Day weekend. Larson’s momentum started slipping during that stretch, especially after his ambitious effort to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
Prior to this demanding double duty challenge, Larson’s sprint car and NASCAR performances were impressive, marked by several strong runs. However, the weekend of the two races marked a downturn, as his results in the first round of post-Memorial Day events included 19th, 12th, and 32nd-place finishes at Darlington, Gateway, and Bristol, respectively.
The Toll of Two Major Races in One Day
Larson’s attempt to conquer the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in a single day ended in disappointment. A crash at Indianapolis on Lap 91 forced him to finish 27th, and although he led 34 laps at Charlotte, he ultimately settled for 37th place. These setbacks dealt a sharp blow to Larson’s confidence and highlighted the immense challenge of competing in both events effectively.
His pace in NASCAR remains respectable, as shown by several top-five and top-10 finishes, but he has yet to reach the winner’s circle since the double duty weekend. Larson’s usually assured demeanor in interviews has also diminished, reflecting the lingering impact of the taxing 1,100-mile effort.

Larson Reflects on Confidence and Challenges
In a candid discussion with Corey LaJoie on the Stacking Pennies podcast, Larson acknowledged the lasting effects of that weekend.
I think looking at the results since then, it’d be hard to argue that it didn’t (affect his confidence) even though I wouldn’t necessarily say I felt any lack of confidence. But my NASCAR stuff took a dip, my sprint car racing took a dip. I mean, it’s hard to argue against it.
Kyle Larson
He described the sharp contrast between his strong performance before the double duty and the difficulties that followed.
It was just odd and in a weird coincidence that I was winning more than half the sprint car races, I was running in, and we had led 900 laps and crushing it in NASCAR to that point, and then I choke, I choke off that Sunday, and it was… It’s been crappy and it hits…
Kyle Larson
Larson shared how the initial confidence didn’t disappear immediately but began to erode after a series of disappointing races.
Everything was going good, but… So, I didn’t feel that way necessarily right off, like right after, but then you go two or three races in a row of like not running good, then it starts like pound up like, is it me, is it the car, what is it?

Commitment to Recovery and Future Outlook
Despite the slump weighing heavily on him, Larson remains convinced that patience and persistence are essential to regain his form. He continues to trust the process his team at Hendrick Motorsports has set, aware that bouncing back will take time. His determination to overcome the aftermath of the double duty challenge shows a commitment to returning to his prior winning ways.
The consequences of Larson’s double duty experience underline how demanding such an effort is, with few drivers able to manage the endurance and focus required for success in both events on the same day. For Larson, the question now is not just how to reestablish his speed and confidence, but how soon he can translate that into top finishes once again.
