Former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve expressed confusion over Lance Stroll’s reported outburst toward Aston Martin staff following qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix. The incident supposedly involved Stroll swearing at several team members and throwing his helmet in frustration at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
However, Aston Martin mechanic Harry Rush publicly denied these claims on social media, stating,
“Swore at team members? Absolutely not true.”
Despite the conflicting reports, Stroll had to withdraw from the race after Aston Martin disclosed that his pre-existing wrist injury worsened, preventing him from competing.
Impact of Stroll’s Wrist Injury on His Performance
Stroll’s wrist problems stem from a cycling accident before the 2023 F1 season, which also caused him to miss testing sessions earlier in the year. This injury escalated to a point where racing at the Spanish Grand Prix was no longer feasible. Aston Martin confirmed that Stroll will return for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, indicating some recovery from his injury.
Villeneuve pointed out the difficulty of driving with wrist issues, elaborating,
“
Lance got a hand injury which meant he couldn’t race in Spain. He broke both wrists a couple of years ago. It sounded like he’s damaged a hand again. But we don’t know. Nobody has the true stories. It’s always very dangerous to say, that’s what happened. We just don’t know. But if you have a wrist injury, then it’s really hard to drive.

Villeneuve Questions the Motivation Behind Stroll’s Outburst
Speaking to BetVictor Casino, Villeneuve admitted he did not witness the incident firsthand and found it difficult to understand Stroll’s frustration. Given that Stroll’s seat at Aston Martin is secure due to his father Lawrence Stroll’s ownership of the team, Villeneuve questioned why Lance would feel pressured.

He added that while frustration over the team‘s current performance might explain some tension, the full context remains unclear:
“His father owns the team. But at some point you get frustrated with the team’s current lack of form. So, who knows what happened in Spain. There might have been other things that we’re not aware of that have nothing to do with the lap time. That’s very easy to judge. We don’t know what’s going on.”
The Role of Fan Criticism in Affecting Stroll’s Temper
Villeneuve suggested that outside negativity may have contributed to Stroll’s emotional state. The driver is often scrutinized for his demeanor in media interactions and his clear advantage in securing a racing spot at Aston Martin.
Villeneuve remarked on how public opinion can weigh on individuals over time:
“
There’s no pressure on Lance, but at some point, people’s comments get into your ear, and it gets frustrating and annoying and the comments aren’t necessarily very positive,
”
followed by,
“
So, every human being will start getting affected at some point.

Looking Ahead: Stroll’s Return and Team Prospects
Aston Martin’s announcement of Stroll’s return for the Canadian Grand Prix raises hopes for his recovery and renewed competitiveness. As he works through his injury challenges, the team will also need to address on-track performance struggles to maintain momentum in the championship.
The tension revealed behind the scenes underscores the pressures drivers face, even with secure team positions, and how injuries and criticism can add to the complexity of managing a racing season.
