Lewis Hamilton Overwhelmed by Messages After Pet Dog’s Death

Before the Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton shared he had been overwhelmed by the number of messages he received after his pet dog, Roscoe, passed away. Roscoe, a 12-year-old French bulldog who had been part of Hamilton’s life since 2013, died on the evening of Sunday, September 28, following four days on life support. The emotional experience marked a significant moment for the seven-time F1 world champion, who openly expressed the deep bond he shared with his pet.

Roscoe had been hospitalized just days earlier due to breathing problems caused by a second episode of pneumonia that year. While under sedation during treatment, Roscoe suffered a cardiac arrest. Fortunately, doctors were able to revive him, but he remained in a coma until Hamilton made the heart-wrenching decision to remove life support on Sunday night. Tributes and condolences poured in worldwide from fans and fellow racing figures alike.

Hamilton Shares Emotional Reflections During Singapore GP

Making his first public appearance in the Singapore paddock after Roscoe’s passing, Hamilton spoke candidly about the emotional toll and the comfort he found in the global support. The messages reflecting how many lives Roscoe had touched resonated deeply with him, giving insight into the widespread affection Roscoe inspired over his many years in Hamilton’s care.

“Lots of messages. Quite overwhelming, to be honest, to see just how many people Roscoe touched around the world, and really heartwarming to receive. I’ve not been able to reply to everybody. It was the most important thing in my life, so it was a very difficult experience,” Hamilton said (as quoted by reporter Adam Cooper).

At 40 years old, Hamilton showed empathy toward others who have experienced pet loss and emphasized how special having such a companion can be. Despite the grief, Hamilton expressed optimism as he turned his focus toward competing in the Singapore Grand Prix.

“And I know so many people in the world have gone through it, and know what it’s like to have a pet that’s just that gives you such amazing love, and it’s an amazing experience. I’m really just looking forward to now just getting back in the car and doing what I love doing here,” Lewis Hamilton added.

Roscoe was well known in the Formula 1 community, frequently seen around paddocks worldwide and adored by fans. His final appearance at an F1 event was during the British Grand Prix in July 2023, leaving a lasting impression within the sport.

Tribute to Kirstin McMillan, Roscoe’s Devoted Caretaker

On September 30, Hamilton took to Instagram to honor Kirstin McMillan, who cared for Roscoe and Hamilton’s other late dog, Coco. He acknowledged her crucial role in their lives, especially while Hamilton was often away for racing commitments. He expressed deep gratitude for her dedication and love toward both dogs, emphasizing how much her support contributed to their well-being.

“I want you take time to uplift my friend Kirstin. She trained both Roscoe and Coco and treated them like family. She helped look after their health, and it is really through her that Roscoe lived so long. While I was travelling, she would take care of him and loved him as if he was hers. She was there everyday, all day,” Hamilton wrote.

“Even with a family and other dogs to look after, she never missed a day. We stood together when letting Roscoe go. I am so grateful to have had her in my life and Roscoe’s life. There is nobody like you Kirstin. Thank you,” the Briton added.

Hamilton’s connection with his bulldogs ran deep. He lost Coco to a suspected heart attack in 2020, a dog he adopted in 2013 along with Roscoe. Despite early warnings from breeders about Coco’s health challenges due to birth complications, Hamilton’s care and the support from McMillan extended their companions’ lives meaningfully.

Hamilton Eyes Stronger Performance at Singapore After Recent Setback

Coming off a disappointing eighth-place finish at the Baku Grand Prix, an event overshadowed by controversies surrounding Ferrari’s team orders, Hamilton is determined to improve his results. The Singapore race marks an opportunity for the Ferrari driver to refocus and channel his resilience in the wake of personal challenges during the F1 season.

Balancing grief and competition, Hamilton’s journey reflects both his human side and his relentless commitment to his sport. The depth of messages he received following Roscoe’s passing highlights the universal bond many share with their pets, an underpinning of support amid the high-pressure environment of Formula 1.
