Portugal is preparing to bring Formula 1 back to the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao starting in 2027, according to Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. This announcement has raised hopes for Lewis Hamilton’s Portimao F1 return, given the seven-time world champion’s flawless winning record at the track.
Hamilton won the Portuguese Grand Prix in both 2020 and 2021, which were the first two editions held at the circuit after the event was added to the calendar due to disruptions from the Covid-19 pandemic. The Algarve track quickly became popular with drivers and fans, marking an important chapter in Hamilton’s career.
Hamilton’s Milestones at Portimao Highlight a Closer Look at His Career
At the initial F1 race in Portimao in 2020, Hamilton surpassed Michael Schumacher‘s previous record of 91 Grand Prix wins, cementing a monumental milestone in the sport. That same season, he also matched Schumacher’s record number of seven World Championships, demonstrating his dominance while racing with Mercedes.
Portugal’s Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm for officially reviving the race next year, linking it to the country’s ongoing efforts to boost the region through major sporting events.
“One of the circumstances that most contributes to promoting this region is major events,”
Montenegro stated during his speech at Na Festa do Pontal.
He continued,
“And I can tell you that we have everything ready to formalise the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve next year, in 2027.”
The declaration aligns with Portugal’s successful strategy of hosting other top-tier motor racing events, such as MotoGP scheduled for 2025 and 2026.

Challenges Ahead for Hamilton as He Seeks to Regain Top Form
The news of Formula 1’s return to Portugal could be an encouraging sign for Lewis Hamilton as he aims to recapture his winning form. Since narrowly missing the 2021 title to Max Verstappen in a dramatic final lap, Hamilton’s victories have been limited, and his switch to Ferrari in 2023 has yet to produce a podium finish.
The 2026 F1 calendar has been finalized without a Portuguese Grand Prix, but if Portugal returns in 2027, it might replace the Dutch Grand Prix, which is set to conclude after the 2026 season. However, Hamilton’s contract with Ferrari runs through 2026, so any opportunity to compete again at Portimao depends on his career decisions beyond that season.
Implications for F1 and Portugal’s Motorsport Future
Reintroducing the Portuguese Grand Prix is significant for both Formula 1 and the region, as it reflects Portugal’s ambitions to host world-class racing while giving fans a chance to watch one of their most successful drivers compete at a beloved venue. This return could enhance the sport’s presence in Southern Europe and offer new challenges and opportunities for drivers and teams alike.
With Hamilton aiming to revive his championship ambitions, the addition of Portimao to the F1 calendar may further motivate him and elevate the competition. As the relationship between F1, Portugal, and its drivers develops, 2027 promises to be an important year for this historic Grand Prix and for Hamilton’s pursuit of more victories.
