Lewis Hamilton Reveals Surprising Post-F1 Movie Career Plans and Regrets Missing Top Gun Role

Lewis Hamilton has announced that he is developing three movie scripts as part of his post-Formula 1 career ambitions. The seven-time world champion, who launched his film production company Dawn Apollo in 2022, is preparing to shift his focus to the film industry after retiring from motorsport.

Hamilton recently attended a private screening of the upcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt in Monaco, where he was involved as a producer and consultant. With his racing career expected to conclude after his current stint with Ferrari, Hamilton is pursuing various projects beyond F1, including film production, real estate, and other entertainment ventures.

Exploring New Creative Ventures After Racing

Hamilton, aged 40, has diversified interests outside Formula 1, boasting a substantial property portfolio and a supercar collection valued at $16.5 million. His cultural engagement also includes serving as co-chair for the 2025 Met Gala. Despite his many activities, he remains passionate about movies and is actively working on film ideas.

He shared that he is co-writing three film concepts alongside a professional writer since he has never authored a movie script before. Two of these projects are planned as animations, while one is already in the early scripting stages. Hamilton described this phase as particularly exciting for him.

And then there will be documentaries, there will be maybe a TV series at some stage, but mostly movies. I love the development of movies — that’s what I love the most.

Seeing his production company Dawn Apollo credited in the new Formula 1 movie gave Hamilton a sense of achievement. The film opens with logos of the involved production houses, featuring his company’s planetary-themed emblem, which was his creative idea. His name also appears early in the film’s producer credits, marking a significant milestone.

So yeah, I’ve gone in very high, I couldn’t go in any higher for the first movie, but we will be producing more movies over the coming years.

Regret Over Missing Acting Opportunity in Top Gun: Maverick

Although Hamilton has experience with voice acting roles in Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 and Cars 3, he revealed regret about having to turn down a role in Top Gun: Maverick because of the demanding F1 schedule. Speaking to GQ, he explained that his inexperience with acting and lack of time prevented him from committing to the part, which he found heartbreaking.

He recalled informing the film’s director Joe Kosinski and lead actor Tom Cruise about his decision, which disappointed him deeply. Watching the finished movie intensified his regret, imagining how different things might have been had he participated.

Since then, Hamilton has worked closely with Kosinski, who directed the Formula 1 movie in which Hamilton was involved as a producer.

Impact of the New F1 Movie on the Sport’s Popularity

F1 commentator Alex Jacques expressed optimism about the forthcoming film’s potential to introduce Formula 1 to new audiences. He referenced the surge in popularity brought by the documentary series Drive to Survive and enhanced digital content availability over recent years.

Jacques praised the director’s previous work on Top Gun: Maverick and expressed hopes that this new movie will attract fresh fans to the sport globally.

So if it’s like that, hopefully, a whole new wave of fans will find F1.
