Luca Marini Affirms Strong VR46 Academy Ties Amid Honda Move

Luca Marini has firmly stated that his commitment to the VR46 Academy remains intact, even as he continues his career with Honda’s MotoGP factory team. Marini, who is also the half-brother of Valentino Rossi, has emphasized he intends to maintain strong connections with the Academy, highlighting continuity despite his evolving career at Honda.

Tracing Marini’s MotoGP Journey and Academy Connections

Marini began his MotoGP journey in 2021 with a debut ride for Avintia Ducati when it operated under the VR46 program. He then joined the VR46 team for its premier class full-season debut, further strengthening his relationship with the group closely linked to Valentino Rossi. Originally expected to remain with the VR46 organization into 2024, Marini eventually transitioned to Honda as a late replacement for Marc Marquez in the factory squad, marking a significant shift in his professional trajectory.

Responding to Talks of Independence from the Academy

There has been speculation about whether an extended stint with Honda would lead Marini to distance himself from the VR46 Academy. Rejecting such claims, Marini has clarified his position in response to these rumors.

“Whenever I can, I spend time with them. I’m not in any process of becoming independent; all I try to do is give 100% every weekend. It’s true that in a factory team we have more events and meetings than in a private team, so it’s harder to find time to be with the guys from the Academy. Now [Marco] Bezzecchi is also in a factory team, as is Pecco [Bagnaia].”

Marini explained that, while his obligations at Honda are greater due to more frequent team events, his ties with the VR46 Academy remain strong. As Marini put it,

Being together isn’t so easy, but between us, everything is the same as always.

Performance and Setbacks in the Latest MotoGP Season

Marini’s 2025 season with Honda saw him finish 13th in the championship, coming within six points of Johann Zarco, who achieved victory on the RC213V at Le Mans. Marini managed this result despite missing three important rounds—from Aragon to Assen—due to injuries sustained during testing for the Suzuka 8 Hours event. Upon returning from this setback, Marini delivered his strongest performances as a Honda rider in the latter stages of the championship.

What Lies Ahead for Marini and Honda

Amidst ongoing changes in the MotoGP rider market and speculation regarding future seats, Honda confirmed Marini’s place in the team lineup through 2026. With several high-profile names, including Jorge Martin, already associated with the upcoming factory seat negotiations, Marini’s consistent presence signals ongoing stability. Throughout these developments, his loyalty to the VR46 Academy and continued focus on contributing at the highest level reflect his dedication to both his team and his roots.
