Marc Marquez’s MotoGP comeback journey was heavily influenced by the advice of Mick Doohan after a severe injury to Marquez’s right arm put his racing future in jeopardy. The arm injury required four surgeries, leading Marquez to contemplate retirement as he faced one of the most challenging moments of his career.
Before the crash at Jerez in 2020, Marquez had established himself as a dominant force in MotoGP, securing six world titles in seven years and showing remarkable skill by climbing from last place to second in that very race. The sudden fall from such success was both shocking and difficult for Marquez to understand.
Doohan’s Experience: A Parallel Path Through Adversity
In seeking guidance, Marquez turned to Mick Doohan, whose own career had been marked by a similar trial. Over thirty years prior, Doohan suffered a devastating crash in Assen that almost cost him his left leg and interrupted his championship streak. Like Marquez, Doohan endured years of recovery before returning to claim five consecutive world titles from 1994 to 1998.
“Marc and I spoke several times during that recovery period. There aren’t many people in the world you can have those kinds of conversations with, because not many of us have gone through that sort of situation. That’s what surely helped him,”
Doohan told Autosport.
His words reflect the unique bond formed between two riders bound by shared pain and determination.
Shared Drive and Motivation Behind the Comebacks
Both riders displayed intense dedication fueled by their love for racing and the unfinished business left by their injuries. Doohan emphasized the strong parallel between the two, noting the emotional and physical toll of recovering from serious accidents.

“There are many similarities with my case, because I was also dominating before I crashed at Assen. It also took me several years to recover. The drive that has pushed Marc to give everything is the desire to keep racing, the same as mine. Marc had unfinished business, and nothing motivates more than that to empty yourself completely,”
added Doohan, who now focuses on supporting his son Jack’s career in Formula 1.
The Mental Strength Behind Marquez’s Recovery
Doohan highlighted the immense inner strength required to overcome multiple injuries and surgeries, traits that Marquez has shown repeatedly. This mental resilience goes beyond physical healing and reveals why Marquez has earned respect for his humility and perseverance.
“Mentally, what Marc has achieved shows just how strong he is. So many injuries and so many operations take you to the deepest part of yourself, as an individual. All the effort behind what he has done explains why he’s such a humble guy,”
the former champion said.
Both men embody a story not only of survival in the world of motorcycling but of redefining greatness despite immense setbacks.
The Lasting Impact of Overcoming Near Defeat
For Marquez, the time spent injured was an arduous and seemingly endless trial. Yet, reflecting on his journey, Doohan believes the experience was ultimately worthwhile and will make future successes even more meaningful.
“This title will be especially rewarding for Marc, above all because he came close to retiring. The time he spent injured felt endless and incredibly hard. But I am sure that now, looking back, he sees it as a period that was worth enduring,”
Doohan concluded.
Marquez’s comeback not only reinforces his status as one of MotoGP’s great talents but also stands as a testament to the power of resilience and mentorship in sport. His story continues to inspire fans and riders alike, demonstrating that even the deepest setbacks can lead to remarkable returns.
