Yuki Tsunoda revealed that Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko only fully understood the extent of the Max Verstappen car performance gap after observing strong showings at the Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix. The upgrades introduced during this period were applied exclusively to Verstappen’s RB21, creating a noticeable difference between the two teammates. This revelation came ahead of the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, as Tsunoda discussed how the varying specifications affected his pace compared to the reigning champion.
Impact of Upgrades on Tsunoda’s Performance
Tsunoda acknowledged the need to display greater performance and credited recent upgrades for his improved pace in the latter part of the season. He said,
“Yeah, definitely I have to show more,”
speaking openly about his development. The Japanesedriver explained that before these enhancements, Helmut Marko and the team may not have fully recognized the car differences affecting his results. After the upgrade, his speed showed marked improvement, particularly noticeable in Hungary where his pace closely matched Verstappen’s during practice sessions.
He added that this narrow gap demonstrated his potential, though he stressed the importance of consistency throughout race weekends. Scoring points remains his priority, which he worked on during the summer break to maximize his championship contributions.
Negotiations and Performance Expectations Going Forward
Tsunoda revealed ongoing discussions with Red Bull about performance benchmarks needed to secure his future within the team. Providing a clear target for improvement, he said,

“And in terms of time, we kind of agreed what kind of time we are looking for to me to show the good performance, in order to let them decide what kind of contract they want for next year. But, let’s see.”
This shows the pressure he faces to demonstrate consistent progress alongside Verstappen to maintain his seat.
Technical Upgrades Narrowing the Gap
The introduction of a new floor to Tsunoda’s car in Belgium significantly enhanced its similarity to Verstappen’s RB21, delivering improved lateral grip and allowing Tsunoda to achieve his best qualifying result with Red Bull so far. While several parts are still awaited to bring his car fully in line with Verstappen’s specifications, Tsunoda remains eager to unlock more of his pace potential throughout upcoming events.
He admitted uncertainty about Marko’s underlying thoughts on his performance and contract but acknowledged the adviser’s clear demand for results.
“Maybe Helmut’s thinking in the background [about sending Tsunoda back to Racing Bulls]. I never know what he’s thinking, to be honest.”
Despite this, Tsunoda feels supported, describing Marko as straightforward and focused on maximizing team points, which places added responsibility on him to perform consistently.
Future with Red Bull and Racing BullsTeam Considerations
Tsunoda hinted at possible future scenarios, including staying with Red Bull or moving to the junior Racing Bullsteam. He commented,
“But if I understand it correctly, he’s still waiting a bit of time to define what’s good for Red Bull. And I think let’s see for Racing Bulls or whatever. They’re performing currently quite well. And it’s a team that I have been for a long time. So, obviously, my main goal is to still stick with Red Bull. But, let’s see.”
Currently, Red Bull stands fourth in the constructors’ championship with 194 points, almost entirely contributed by Verstappen with 187 points. This discrepancy underlines the importance of Tsunoda bridging the gap to bolster the team’s title defense prospects.
