Max Verstappen has shared how much he misses his family due to the demanding schedule of Formula 1, which keeps him apart from his loved ones for the majority of the year. The four-time world champion recently spoke about his deep family connections during a summer break spent with his partner Kelly Piquet, their new daughter Lily, and stepdaughter Penelope.
During this year’s summer shutdown, Verstappen was also seen enjoying time with his mother Sophie Kumpen, sister Victoria, and her twin sons, Luka and Lio, highlighting the closeness of his extended family. In an interview with The Athletic, the Dutch driver reflected on one of the hardest parts of being an F1 driver—living away from those closest to him.
Verstappen expresses longing for simple family moments
Verstappen described the emotional challenge of missing everyday family interactions.
I feel like I’m already missing out so much on just being with my family,
Verstappen explained.
He detailed how, despite spending holidays together, he craves the casual moments that come with everyday life—the times when he could drop by unannounced, relax on the couch, or unwind after a regular workday.
We live quite far apart now, (so) these kinds of moments are not possible with my life. I hope one day that it can go back to that.
Balancing retirement thoughts and racing ambitions
Asked about when he might retire, Verstappen admitted that he is uncertain about the timing, acknowledging that the future remains unclear.
I don’t know when that will stop. Is that 32? Is that 35? 36? I don’t know. It’s impossible to know.
While his family remains a central priority, Verstappen’s passion for racing continues to drive him. Since becoming a father earlier this year, his motivation has only grown, but he has also explored avenues beyond Formula 1. He has expressed interest in competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and undertook a GT3 test earlier this season, alongside his active engagement in sim racing during downtime.
Nevertheless, the demands and media responsibilities attached to a full F1 season are far greater than what a one-off event like Le Mans would require, limiting his available time with family.
What lies ahead for Verstappen’s family and career?
Verstappen’s revelations about missing family life provide insight into the personal sacrifices behind his public success. Balancing the intense commitments of Formula 1 with his role as a husband and father remains a challenge. As he continues to consider his future both on and off the track, his focus on family life alongside his racing ambitions will likely shape his next decisions.
