Max Verstappen Hums Through Nurburgring Permit Chase Despite Setbacks

Max Verstappen is currently pursuing a crucial racing milestone during his break from Formula 1 by attempting to secure an ‘A permit’ at the Nurburgring this weekend. Competing in the 65th ADAC ACAS Cup on the demanding Nordschelife circuit, Verstappen aims to qualify to race GT3 cars at this iconic track despite several challenges.

The four-time world champion is driving a Porsche 718 Cayman in the seventh round of the NLS, having also completed a driving lesson on Friday to prepare for the event. Although he showed strong pace in qualifying on Saturday morning, Verstappen’s car, marked No. 980, has been heavily detuned due to the absence of an ‘A permit,’ significantly limiting his speed compared to other competitors.

Once the race began, this handicap quickly became apparent. Verstappen struggled with straight-line speed, allowing faster cars to overtake him early on. His difficulties led to running wide on several corners, momentarily forcing him off the track. Despite this, he remained composed, fully aware that victory was not his goal in this session.

Determined Focus on Securing the Nurburgring Racing Permit

As events unfolded, Verstappen found a steady rhythm on the demanding 16-mile circuit. Race commentator John Hindhaugh observed that Verstappen seemed relaxed, “probably humming tunes to himself.” The primary aim for Verstappen is to complete 14 laps without incident, a requirement for obtaining the ‘A permit’ needed to compete regularly in GT3 cars at the Nurburgring.

If successful, Verstappen is expected to join Emil Frey Racing behind the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3 at the upcoming 57th ADAC Barbarossapreis on September 27. This race falls between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grand Prix events, allowing him to continue gaining experience on this challenging track.

Verstappen’s permit attempt carries significant implications for his racing career, as it would enable him to expand his motorsport activities beyond F1. By meeting the permit requirements, he can compete in the highly respected GT3 class at the Nurburgring, adding to his versatility as a driver.
