In the competitive realm of Formula 1, where rivalries often take center stage, it’s a rarity to find one driver openly admiring another—especially someone as dominant as Max Verstappen. Yet, Daniel Ricciardo, known for his laid-back demeanor and straightforward charm, expressed genuine appreciation for the Dutch driver. During a conversation with Ariel Helwani, Ricciardo admitted to being a fan of Verstappen’s candid nature and straightforwardness.
Asked by Helwani, “Who are you most the fan of on the grid?” Ricciardo paused before he responded, “I mean for different reasons, I guess, Max. Because I think he is what he is.” This statement, though from a three-year-old podcast, recently resurfaced, striking a chord with many fans. Ricciardo’s respect holds significant weight given their shared history at Red Bull Racing.
Ricciardo highlighted Verstappen’s no-nonsense approach to media obligations as a quality he greatly respects. “If he doesn’t wanna talk to someone, in the media or whatever, he won’t,” Ricciardo remarked. Verstappen’s openness about his dislike for the dramatized elements of Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” is well-known, with the driver choosing to opt out of certain appearances. Ricciardo noted, “I think some of the Netflix stuff now, with the new season… he has said no to a few of the things.”
This level of confidence and self-assuredness resonates with Ricciardo. “He kind of just has his way, and he just sticks by it,” the Australian explained, emphasizing the authenticity that Verstappen brings to the sport. “You just get what you see. And I think a lot of people also admire that.” Despite not being the most outgoing or charismatic figure, Verstappen’s honesty is what sets him apart, according to Ricciardo. “He might not be the most approachable or the funniest or whatever, but he is Max… and people know that’s what they’re gonna get.”
Having raced alongside Verstappen during their time at Red Bull, Ricciardo had the chance to witness the development of his teammate firsthand. “I’ve known him quite a long time as well, and I have also seen him mature and kind of grow,” he mentioned.
The acknowledgment of Max Verstappen’s straightforward nature by Daniel Ricciardo provides an insightful look into the high-pressure world of Formula 1 and the distinct personalities it fosters. As Verstappen continues to evolve and impact the sport, his uncompromising honesty remains a defining trait that endears him to both fans and fellow competitors like Ricciardo. It’s a quality that might well influence how future drivers approach their careers, valuing authenticity over superficial showmanship.
