MotoGP 2026 Pre-Season Testing Venues Remain Uncertain Ahead of Key Meeting

The dates and locations for the MotoGP 2026 pre-season testing venues remain undecided due to ongoing questions about the city that will host the season launch event. This delay follows the announcement of the 2026 race calendar over a month ago, which features 22 grands prix, including Brazil’s return as the second round.

Possible Host Cities for the Season Launch Event

The 2026 season will continue the format started this year, with a dedicated season launch event. Among the three candidate citiesKuala Lumpur, Melbourne, and Singapore—Kuala Lumpur is favored by most teams for logistical and cost efficiency. Given that pre-season testing is expected to begin at Sepang, located just outside Kuala Lumpur, in early February following the shakedown sessions, holding the launch there would be convenient.

If Kuala Lumpur is selected, the second round of testing might take place either at the Thailand Grand Prix venue, which opens the season in March, or back at Sepang, allowing most pre-season activities to be centered around the Malaysian capital.

Challenges of Alternative Launch Locations

Melbourne emerges as an appealing alternative but presents more logistical complexity. If chosen, the launch could be scheduled between the two test sessions. To avoid the difficulties and tight schedules involved with transporting full MotoGP bikes over long distances, organisers might opt to display show bikes, rather than the actual race motorcycles.

Singapore remains a contender due to its commercial and promotional benefits, which align with Dorna’s efforts to enhance the championship’s global appeal.

Upcoming Meeting to Decide Final Testing Venues and Dates

Representatives from MotoGP teams met with IRTA officials at the Austrian Grand Prix, but no firm decisions on the pre-season testing venues emerged. According to Motorsport.com, a significant meeting involving Dorna officials is scheduled during the Catalan GP in Barcelona from September 5 to 7. This gathering is expected to confirm the testing schedules and respective locations for 2026.

Importance of Finalizing 2026 Pre-Season Testing Plans

Securing the venues and dates for the MotoGP 2026 pre-season testing is critical for teams’ preparations and logistics. The choice impacts travel arrangements, equipment shipments, and the overall efficiency of testing programs. The decision on the launch city will also influence promotional activities and cost management leading into the new season.
