Casey Stoner Warns MotoGP 2027 Rules Could Crush Overtaking and Change Racing Forever

The MotoGP community faces major changes set for 2027, including a shift from 1,000cc to 850cc engines, the removal of ride-height devices, strict aerodynamic limits, and a weight reduction from 157kg to 153kg. These measures aim to slow the rapid performance growth and improve rider safety, but former world champion Casey Stoner warns that these adjustments could severely reduce overtaking opportunities, threatening the excitement of the sport.

Concerns About Lighter Bikes and Reduced Braking Distances

Stoner, known for his criticism of the increasing influence of aerodynamics and electronics in MotoGP, highlights a serious issue with the planned changes. He explains that making the bikes lighter will shorten braking zones, which decreases the chances for riders to pass one another during races.

Another concern raised by Stoner is that lighter bikes may corner faster, producing more turbulent “dirty air” behind leading riders, which can cause tire overheating and make it harder for trailing competitors to keep pace.

Manufacturers have postponed 850cc engine testing until November 17, 2025, allowing a critical window to evaluate how the changes in aerodynamics, weight, power, and tire behavior interact.
