Ducati’s technical chief Gigi Dall’Igna emphasized that understanding the new Pirelli tyres will be more critical to success in MotoGP 2027 than the upcoming rule changes. Scheduled for 2027, the regulations will reduce engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc, limit aerodynamic elements, and remove ride height and holeshot devices, creating a transformed racing environment.
Dall’Igna’s View on the New Regulations
Dall’Igna suggested that the rule adjustments aim mostly to level the playing field rather than improve the sport itself. He explained that rivals pushed for these changes with hopes of narrowing Ducati’s overwhelming advantage in recent years, as the Italian manufacturer approaches a fourth consecutive riders’ championship and has secured six straight constructors‘ titles.
In the end, sometimes the rule changes, you make some rule changes not because it’s better for the championship, but because the other competitors want to go in this direction. Because they think that [they can] reduce the gap between them and somebody else,
said Dall’Igna.
Significance of the Tyre Supplier Shift
Despite the attention on new engine and aerodynamic regulations, Dall’Igna believes the switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres represents the biggest challenge for teams aiming to succeed in 2027. He pointed out that the tyre characteristics will strongly influence overall performance and require focused adaptation.
Honestly speaking, the most important change will not be the rule change, but it will be the tyre change,
he stated.
We have a different tyre supplier starting from 2027 and, for sure, this could make a big step in the overall performance. So, this is, in my opinion, the key that we have to pay attention to.
[To win in 2027] you have to understand what that tyre needs in order to go fast.
Challenges in Preparing for the Pirelli Tyres
Early testing of Pirelli tyres has faced complications, including disagreements over who should finance these sessions and delays because the 2027-spec bikes are not yet ready to race. The first official test using modified 2025 machines is planned for the Tuesday following the San Marino Grand Prix.
Implications for Teams and the Future of MotoGP
Dall’Igna’s insights highlight how mastering the new Pirelli tyres will be decisive for teams in the evolving MotoGP landscape. While changes in engine size and aerodynamics will shift the racing dynamics, success will depend largely on adapting to the demands of the new rubber. How quickly teams understand and optimize Pirelli tyres will likely shape the championship battles in the years to come.
