MotoGP and Formula 1 Crossover Event Could Happen: Dorna Boss Says “Everything Is Worth a Try Once”

Carlos Ezpeleta, the head of Dorna, expressed openness to the idea of a MotoGP and Formula 1 crossover event, noting that

“everything is worth a try once.”

This potential collaboration between the two premier racing series could take place at the same circuit during one weekend, a concept that has attracted interest for several years.

Following Liberty Media’s acquisition of MotoGP—approved by the European Union this July—the possibility of staging both events together has gained momentum. Ezpeleta acknowledged the logistical hurdles involved, emphasizing the importance of considering fan preferences and operational challenges before moving forward.

Challenges and Opportunities in Combining Two Racing Series

Ezpeleta highlighted that while both Formula 1 and MotoGP enjoy sold-out venues and strong fan bases, accommodating both within the same physical space presents a challenge. Expanding onsite capacity to fit both series simultaneously is difficult, especially at circuits where space is limited.

He explained that MotoGP and Formula 1 appeal to distinct audiences, particularly in emerging markets where the fan demographics differ significantly. Understanding these differences will be crucial to ensuring the crossover event resonates well. As Ezpeleta stated,

“we have to pay attention to what our fans want”

and consider their expectations carefully.

Previous assessments of the idea have identified practical issues, such as the use and setup of air fences required for MotoGP safety, which could complicate the schedule and logistics between sessions. Despite these complications, the Dorna boss confirmed a willingness to explore the crossover further with caution.

Balancing Innovation with Authenticity in Racing

Ezpeleta stressed the importance of preserving the unique qualities of each racing series.

“It’s important, though, that both racing series remain authentic as they are,”

he said, underscoring the need to maintain the essence and traditions that fans value in both MotoGP and Formula 1.

The involvement of Liberty Media is expected to bring new opportunities, and with ongoing consideration, any future crossover could potentially expand the reach of both sports. The exploration of this idea signals an innovative approach aimed at increasing exposure while respecting the core identities of the racing series.

The discussion about a possible MotoGP and Formula 1 crossover marks an exciting yet cautious step forward, reflecting a desire to explore growth without disrupting what makes each series distinctive.
