MotoGP Team Legend Reveals Unforgettable Career Highlights

Herve Poncharal, the founder of the renowned Tech3 team, has shared the defining moments of his MotoGP team career highlights as he steps down after more than three decades at the pinnacle of grand prix racing. Reflecting during the recent Valencia finale, Poncharal outlined the achievements that shaped both his journey and the legacy of Tech3.

Tech3’s Rise and New Leadership

Poncharal launched the Tech3 team in 1990, guiding it to success across multiple classes, including 250cc, Moto2, and MotoGP. In the summer of last year, Poncharal announced the sale of Tech3 to a group led by Guenther Steiner, the former Haas Formula 1 team principal. The transition, valued at €20 million, became official at the start of 2026 with Steiner taking on the role of CEO. This shift marks a new chapter for Tech3 but leaves behind a trail of impressive accomplishments under Poncharal’s stewardship.

Memorable Victories and Career Milestones

During his appearance at the Valencia season finale in November, Poncharal discussed the four pivotal moments of his involvement in grand prix racing that define his time leading Tech3 over three decades. He recounted his first triumph in the sport, a victory alongside Dominique Sarron in 1986, reflecting proudly on the foundation it set for future successes.

“Top moments? I would say that would be the first-ever victory [I was involved with in grand prix racing], and I think that was back in 1986 with Dominique Sarron,”

The celebration continued in 2000, when Tech3 captured the coveted world title at Phillip Island. Poncharal fondly recalled sharing this special achievement with his close friend, Barry Sheene. The day remains deeply significant, symbolizing the international recognition of Tech3’s efforts and the strength of the team’s camaraderie.

The third major accomplishment came in Catalunya, where Tech3 built its own Moto2 bike in the workshop between two races, clinching victory with rider Yuki Takahashi. This win exemplified the ingenuity and determination that characterized Poncharal’s leadership. The journey culminated in 2020, as Miguel Oliveira’s win in Austria, and Tech3’s commanding performance in Portugal, wrote new chapters of dominance and historical achievement for the squad.

“On the Sunday night in Portimao in 2020, I was with all of the KTM management, Red Bull, with Miguel, we were sure things were going to move forward and at that time we were the happiest team in the world.”

Legacy, Transition, and the Road Ahead

Though stepping down as owner, Poncharal will remain involved with Tech3 in a consultancy capacity this year, guiding the new leadership as the team transitions under Guenther Steiner. The squad will continue with its current racing line-up, featuring Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini, maintaining consistency as it competes in MotoGP’s upcoming season.

Poncharal’s MotoGP team career highlights not only underscore his commitment to innovation and excellence, but also illustrate the enduring impact of key figures such as Dominique Sarron, Yuki Takahashi, Miguel Oliveira, and Barry Sheene. With ongoing support from organizations like KTM and Red Bull, and a steadfast spirit within the team, Tech3’s influence in grand prix racing is set to endure as new leadership embarks on the next stage of its journey.
