Nico Hulkenberg: Sauber’s Progress Signals a Bright Future Ahead of Audi’s 2026 F1 Takeover

As Formula 1 enters its mid-season break, Nico Hulkenberg has shared his insights on the positive momentum Sauber is building ahead of Audi’s official takeover in 2026. The German driver highlighted that the Swiss team is advancing steadily despite significant transitions set for the upcoming years.

Joining Sauber at the beginning of the 2025 season, Hulkenberg explained that although the team is undergoing several technical changes, the direction remains promising. He emphasized the importance of the infrastructure and team development taking place behind the scenes, which is crucial for the transformation to Audi. Regarding these developments, Hulkenberg said:

“Obviously so many things change on the technical side next year and I think many people are in the dark and we can only really just speculate. But what is being built behind the scenes and the infrastructure, and the team structure that we’re building, that is growing. I think that looks good, [it] looks positive. Still a lot more to do if we look and compare ourselves to the top runners currently, but [we are] definitely going in the right direction.” —Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber driver

This season, Sauber—driven by Hulkenberg and newcomer Gabriel Bortoleto—is experiencing a notable upswing, sitting seventh in the constructors’ championship with 51 points. This marks a substantial improvement compared to 2024, when the team only accumulated four points, scoring once at the Qatar Grand Prix. Sauber is now just one point shy of sixth-placed Aston Martin, reflecting strong competitiveness in the midfield.

Insights from Hulkenberg on His 2025 Campaign So Far

Reflecting on the first half of the 2025 season, Nico Hulkenberg described his performance with Sauber as largely positive and encouraging. After joining the team this year, Hulkenberg noted a significant shift in form and results following the Spanish Grand Prix, which has strengthened his confidence in the team’s trajectory.

Speaking in an interview with Motorsportsweek, he stated:

“Well, if I look back and reflect on it, I think it’s definitely more positive than anything else. Obviously, if you consider, looking from winter testing when we started, the first couple of races, then since Barcelona, five races consecutively in the points, a podium, a couple of really strong drives and performances from us.

“So, I think the trend is right. It would have been nice to start there, but it came differently But definitely recently, I think we are heading in the right direction.” —Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber driver

Hulkenberg is currently recording his strongest start to a Formula 1 season in years. He also ended a long wait for a podium by finishing third at the British Grand Prix. With 37 points, including several consistent points finishes, he ranks ninth in the driver standings, underlining both his and Sauber’s improved pace.

What Sauber’s Development Means for the Future

Sauber’s current upward trajectory and internal growth signify an encouraging outlook for the team as it prepares for Audi’s full entry into Formula 1. The improvements in infrastructure, team structure, and on-track performance indicate a foundation being laid for sustained success. While the team is still some way off the current frontrunners, the progress seen in 2025 offers optimism for a more competitive 2026 season and beyond.

For Hulkenberg and his Sauber colleagues, maintaining this momentum will be crucial as Audi’s resources and technological influence become embedded. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the transition unfolds and whether Sauber can leverage these developments to break further into the sport’s elite.
