Rookie Robert Shwartzman Reveals Cautious Indy 500 Pole Strategy: “Easy to Make a Big Mistake”

On Sunday, May 18, rookie driver Robert Shwartzman earned pole position for the Indianapolis 500, outlining a careful plan to maintain his lead amid intense competition. Driving the #83 Chevrolet for PREMA in the NTT IndyCar Series, Shwartzman became the first rookie in 42 years to claim the pole spot at this prestigious event, joining Teo Fabi, who last achieved it in 1983.

After securing pole, Shwartzman faced the challenge of leading a tough front row that includes experienced rivals Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato and two-time runner-up Pato O’Ward. When asked about his approach to the crucial start, he emphasized caution and observation.

Shwartzman Plans a Careful Start to Hold the Lead

Robert Shwartzman acknowledged the intense pressure of converting his pole position into a strong race lead, especially with skilled drivers alongside him. He explained his mindset to avoid costly mistakes at this demanding track.

“I just probably take it easy,” he said. “I guess I need to just analyze and see what the others are doing because, you know, it’s very easy to make a big mistake here. It can cost a lot,” said Robert Shwartzman.

“I just want to make it a smooth ride … then we’re just going to race,” he added.

Currently, Shwartzman holds 47 points in the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series standings, placing him 24th as the season progresses toward the Indianapolis 500 race weekend.

Will Buxton Expresses Amazement at Shwartzman’s Pole Achievement

Will Buxton, former Formula 1 presenter and now IndyCar commentator, reacted with astonishment to Shwartzman’s pole win. Reflecting on their shared history in Formula 1, Buxton described how unexpected the achievement felt based on past moments together.

Buxton frequently hosted pre and post-race shows on F1TV, featuring reserve drivers like Shwartzman to discuss race details and engage viewers. The two developed a friendly rapport, occasionally sharing lighthearted moments off-air. Buxton recalled one such instance at the Zandvoort circuit last year, where they jokingly exchanged lyrics from “Notorious B.I.G.”

“Honestly, when @ShwartzmanRob and I were dropping Notorious BIG lyrics to each other on a pre show warmup in the Zandvoort F1 paddock last year and you’d told us I’d be calling him to pole at the Indy500 the next year, neither of us would have believed you. It was all a dream,” wrote Buxton (via X).

Looking Ahead to the 109th Indianapolis 500

The much-anticipated 109th Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday, May 25th. As a rookie secured pole for the first time in over four decades, the race promises a compelling mix of fresh determination and veteran skill. Shwartzman’s cautious strategy will be closely watched as he aims to convert his historic starting position into a competitive performance on race day.
