Ryan Blaney, who claimed the inaugural Cup win at Iowa Speedway, is targeting consecutive victories at this track on Sunday, aiming to build on his strong performance from last season.
Personal Connection and Support Fuel Blaney’s Motivation
Blaney holds deep family ties to Iowa Speedway, as his mom’s side of the family resides nearby. Reflecting on last year’s win, he emphasized the emotional significance of having a large group of supporters in Victory Lane, including relatives he hadn’t seen in years.
“I’m really looking forward to it,”
Blaney shared.
“That’s a special place for me and for my mom’s side of the family. We had a lot of people there last year supporting us. That was a fun Victory Lane.”
He added,
“It’s not often that you get to have 80 people with you in Victory Lane, and heck, half of them I’d never met before — kids of cousins I haven’t seen in years. So that was special. So, I’d like to go up there and defend, and we’ll see if we can do that.”
Track Surface Challenges Complicated Last Year’s Race
The 2023 race posed unusual difficulties due to partial repaving of all four corners just a month before the event. Drivers faced an unusual situation where the track combined new, smooth pavement with older, bumpier sections, forcing them to adapt quickly during high-speed turns.
Blaney described the challenge:
“It’s like driving in two different realities in one turn,”
noting the need to adjust his braking point from the old pavement initially to the new surface shortly after. That required constant recalibration mid-corner to maintain speed and control.
Despite these obstacles, the race remained competitive and entertaining. Blaney dominated by leading 201 of the 350 laps, including the last 88, showcasing his skill and adaptability under demanding conditions.

“The corner pace was incredibly high, but I still think it put on a good show.”
Current Season Performance and Ongoing Challenges
Heading into Sunday’s race, Blaney sits seventh in the NASCAR Cup Series standings after 22 races in the 26-race regular season. His record includes one victory at Nashville, which secured his place in the playoffs, alongside seven top-five and ten top-10 finishes.
However, his results have been hampered by seven DNFs, five of which were caused by crashes and two due to engine failures. These setbacks have limited his overall success despite consistent speed and solid performances.
Blaney acknowledged the difficulties:
“We’ve just been in some bad spots at the wrong time and have not been able to get the finishes that we want or deserve,”
but remained optimistic about his team’s progress.
“I look at it as we’re doing a lot of good things, and I’m happy with where our group is at, and I’m happy with the speed.”
He concluded with hope for smoother results ahead:
“I’m hoping that things smooth up for us, and that’s all you can do, really.”
