Ryan Blaney is at the center of a strategic shift in NASCAR as his pit crew undergoes a major reorganization ahead of the Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The move, announced on April 17, follows a series of inconsistent performances by Blaney’s crew during the initial part of the season. This change is made possible by Team Penske’s technical alliance with Front Row Motorsports (FRM), which allows the sharing of pit crew members. Consequently, Skip Flores, a former front tire changer for Blaney’s No.12 team, has transferred to Zane Smith‘s No.38 under FRM, with Keiston France taking Flores’ place at Team Penske.
Ryan Blaney’s recent experience at Darlington Raceway spotlighted the need for this change. Blaney was leading the race with only three laps to go when a crash involving Kyle Larson triggered a caution, resulting in Denny Hamlin seizing the lead after a pit stop. Ultimately, Blaney fell back approximately 20 positions, missing out on a win at the notoriously challenging track, “The Track Too Tough to Tame.”
Despite these setbacks, Blaney’s crew showcased their potential during the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The race, where Blaney placed among the top five for the second time consecutively, was marked by low tire wear, presenting difficulties in overtaking. Nevertheless, Blaney’s team managed to secure an eighth-place rating in pit-stop performance, demonstrating their prowess. In response, Blaney expressed appreciation for his crew’s efforts on social media, highlighting their hard work and determination.
As it stands, Ryan Blaney is sixth in the driver’s standings after nine races, earning three top-five finishes. As he approaches Talladega Superspeedway, a familiar and successful track with three previous Cup Series victories, he has the NASCAR playoffs and a promising season ahead in his sights. His last win at Talladega in 2023 propelled him into the Round of 8 in the playoffs and ultimately to his first NASCAR Cup championship. The significance of this pit crew shake-up can’t be understated; it aims to boost Blaney’s performance, potentially setting the stage for further triumphs in the 2023 season.
